Did it in the UK as a kid, but it's not as insane as it is over here, with stuff out months in advance, loads of decorations, costumes, parties etc.
Where we use to live in Casco, they were more into Halloween than X-mas, very weird...but it's kind of fun watching kids run from car to door with a costume squeezed into a snow suit

Don't think it even existed in the UK when I was a nipper. Trick or treating was some "American" thing that we didn't do. We used to go up to my primary school where they'd have apple bobbing 10p panda pops and a kids disco with fancy dress. I won one year when my mum back-combed my hair, made me a dress out of bin bags and stuck coco pops on my face with uhu glue.
My mum didn't like to do much else as she didn't want to "celebrate evil"
- something to do with some kind of horrifying ouija board experience when she was a teenager that made her shit scared of that kind of stuff.
I live in an apartment building so no kids come to our door. The only Halloween candy I like are the Reese's Halloween Pumpkins.
Anyone else live in a place where they tie life-size corn dolly's to their front porch? Its fricking scary driving at night, feel like I've driven into the children of the corn town or something

Makes me feel like rewiring the doorbell so it's live, it's only low voltage but enough to give them a trick or treat. Baah Humbug

I preferred the way we did it in the UK when I was young. Apple bobbing...maybe some toffee apples...telling ghost stories..and making lanterns out of turnips or swedes. Trick or treat is great for the little ones but the teens that come to my door will just get a bored sod off look.

Re: halloween?
We have a street party on Halloween. We put one big table out with all the 'sweets' on it. The kids come and help themselves and we all sit there and just get trashed.
Works a treat

Organised begging it may be, but I always felt we deserved something after spending an entire day carving a f'cking turnip. With a spoon.
Pumpkins are no challenge at all.

As to the teenagers who come (usually with no costume or anything)- we keep 2 bowls of candy- one with the 'good stuff; mini-snickers/mounds/musketeers etc, and one with a bag of crap 'penny candy'. Little kids in cute costumes get 2-3 good ones, a thank you will get 'em another- and the teens in no costume gets one'sweet tart' envelope or similar 'crap' candy and a stone cold look they won't forget and a comment on how nice their costume is.
