Re: Good Beer
Great Lakes Brewing
- Burning River Pale Ale. A hoppy American pale ale. 4/5. DB
- Dortmunder Gold. Nice Dortmund style larger. Not like stella, a little more malty and hoppy. 4/5. DB
- Eliot Ness. Good vienna style larger. Darker and more malty than stella type largers. 3.5/5. DB
- Edmund Fitzgerald. The best porter I've ever had. 5/5. DB
- Conways Irish Ale. Only available Jan-March. 5/5. DB

Great Lakes Brewing (any of their stuff) is just bloomin excellent.
The only stuff i generally go for is Sieera Nevada (already covered earlier)
Shiner Bock (DB). full-flavoured, deep amber-colored beer
Shiner Blonde (DB), Bog Standard Pilsener. muted taste, Not much malt, hop or barley, but strangely drinkable (or so my missus says)
both from the Spoetzl Brewery out of Austin, TX
The best for though is anything from this lot http://www.willoughbybrewing.com/beer.htm
and it has nothing to do with the fact (honest) that the place is less than 15 minutes walk from my house and they will sell it to you in Growlers to take home . In fact i was there last night knocking their wonderful beer back

Re: Good Beer
I'm not really a beer snob and I'll drink pretty much anything, but if I'm looking for good beer, anything from the following breweries will do:
US first tier:
Three Floyds (Indiana)
Victory (Pennsylvania)
Capital (Wisconsin)
Great Lakes (Ohio)
Stone (California)
Ommegang (New York)
Rogue (Oregon)
Dogfish Head (Delaware)
Kalamazoo (Indiana)
US Second Tier:
Brooklyn (New York)
Magic Hat (Vermont)
Tremont (Massachusetts)
Goose Island (Illinois)
Hair of the Dog (Oregon)
New Glarus (Wisconsin)
Boston Beer aka Sam Adams (Massachusetts)
Sierra Nevada (California)
Allagash (Maine)
I generally stay away from bottled imports because liquor stores are typically bad about storing things correctly and they're usually skunked by the time you get them...
Having said that:
Belgian (easy to find):
Saison Dupont
Chimay
St. Bernardus
Duvel
Germany (easy to find):
Ayinger Celebrator
Ayinger Ur-Weisse
Paulaner
Aventinus
Uerige
I won't pretend to be an expert in UK beer beyond saying you guys make some damned good stuff...

Re: Good Beer
Did some one mention Duval
Theres a bar in Oodenaarde (Helgium) with a fish tank full of cash.
The story goes that anyone who can drink 10 in an hour without getting off thier bar stool wins the cash.

Re: Good Beer
Your location should be "Oregon, land of beer." There aren't many other states that produce the amount of quality beer that Oregon does.

Re: Good Beer
with the notable exception of Sam Adams products, which I've gone right off. There's so much good stuff out there and I think Sam Adams has gone for the blander end of the spectrum to appeal to the sizeable market who knows they don't like Bud but isn't interested in experimenting with less-"known" brands.

Re: Good Beer
Well can you tell him to start making a decent IPA and not over caramalising his brews which is cheating.

Re: Good Beer
I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people can post what decent beers are available to them, American or Import. I think it would be beneficial to both the old and the new people here, plus I like talking about beer!....................Conways Irish Ale. Only available Jan-March. 5/5. DB
Old Speckled Hen
Boddingtons
Abbot
.......all in draught-style cans.
Also they carry Strongbow cider.

Re: Good Beer
<shaking head> The sooner you lot stop putting your stock in imported skunked brews, and realize that there are excellent beers in this country, the happier you will be.
