Do you know where you might live upon retirement? Roths are handy in being non-taxable in both the US and UK.
I haven't done a backdoor Roth myself, as I don't need that arcane a level of financial planning. What we're planning to do instead is use our late 50s and 60s - after finishing work and before various pensions kick in - to rollover chunks of money from 401ks/ IRAs into a Roth. Consideration can then be given to balancing income to use as much of the 15% bracket as possible, versus maximizing ACA subsidies.
