Gosh, this brings back some memories. I used to go to Friendly's (in Medfield and Framingham) when my kids were little. I used to think of it as a step up from McDonalds but still a place that was crap enough that people didn't moan about your kids not being quiet enough.

No more Fribble's or clamboats. I haven't eaten at a Friendly's in at least 10 years but I did love that place!

My son in England monitors teh interwebs for me and sent me this good piece from Slate about Friendly's and Nicholson Baker, the well-known novelist & luddite.

That's interesting about the cyclic lifespan of a restaurant. I was thinking that about Starbucks and how some of my hotel guests (sometimes frantically ) ask me where the Starbucks is. I wonder how long that will last? Me, I don't have the pocketbook for it and I'm not that enamored of their coffee, so it's like whatever.....

Nicholson Baker mentions ordering items at Friendly's that disappeared from the menu decades ago.. we've done that too, and always got a good response!

I always remember seeing a dirty little greasy spoon cafe in Swansea that had a huge sign outside that said something like, "The Best Cup Of Coffee In The World" on it. Now, call me skeptical but I'm not sure the cup of Tesco Value Instant Coffee is the best we can do.

Don't get me started on that-many, times in different places I had a favorite item that gets yanked, never to return.

taco bell would be better if buried under concrete for ever.

never tried half the places you mention - red lobster just gives me the shudders.
