Maybe. Or fear of something.
There's a vast chasm of difference between "Hey, I love hunting, want to come try it out", or "Come to the range with me and try this gun, I think it's fun, you might do so too" to "Guns are my life and I will literally shoot you in the head if you look at me the wrong way."

Re: Florida shooting
My daughter had to be picked-up from school a little while back after some kid decided it would be a good idea to bring a handgun into school. FWIW I don't think he planned on doing anything with it, and might be having second thoughts now he is spending some time in the local jail.
It does bring the debate into focus.
On a personal level Boiler, I am someone that would be ok with a ban. I am however acutely aware that I am new to this country and it has it's own culture an history that I need to respect if I wish to stay. Part of that is the 2A and so I wouldn't advocate for a ban. I do however think it should not be beyond people to have adult conversations about ways to mitigate risks in life. It's why the constant harping about cars and mobiles does you a disservice in my opinion. I'd happily jump on a debate about the need to have stricter rules on both, better driving instruction, etc.

I found this article quite interesting
History of the AR-15 and why it's frequently used in US mass shootings - Business Insider
Dicks had previously stopped selling guns to under 21's and then changed their mind. It seems that not much in the US sticks as far as legislation goes. So much legislation is temporary. AR-15s were banned up until 2004, and then the law lapsed.

Re: Florida shooting
Over the years I have mentioned in general conversation about how easy the US Driving Test is, there are similarities I think, my impression is that most Americans see Driving as a right, have yet to come across one who thinks that the test should be harder.
There are Driving Instructors in Colorado, I know because I have seen a marked car, but they are seemingly a very rare species.

Like the fact that killings in the US committed using rifles, of any sort are a small percentage of the total. Restricting access to rifles might reduce the number of spree killings, but is unlikely to make a noticeable difference to the total number of killings each year in the US using firearms.
