I wouldn't want to be close by in a small boat when it's going 30 knots!!

Stupidly excessive. Still if you have so much money you physically couldn't waste it away its an easy way of showing you can spend in excess of half a billion dollars without being worried. I wonder how it's financed? :P

They call it a yacht, but it's about the same size as a light cruiser from WWII and longer than most destroyers of the period.

I used to know someone, a retired naval commander, who used to take these sort of ships out for sea trials, and would also deliver them from one country to another when, say, the owner was in New York and wanted it taking over to the carribean. He was paid for his time, and all necessary air fares, so got a free holiday.

The first oil tanker I was ever on was only 171.5m long, would probably cost around $35mill now and it could carry around 24000 tonnes of oil at max 15 knots (downhill on a good day!)......this "yacht" is 8.5m longer, twice as fast and 20 times as expensive....but I bet it can only carry around 1000 tonnes of oil, if that. Bit of an achilles heel in Top Trumps!!

Yeah, its still going. The kids have a fwe packs, but it struggles to hold up against ipods, DS, Xbox etc....:(

Although there is still hope, as they are getting into Risk and Escape from Colditz which were both rescued from my Mams attic last year...

I would think you would need at least a minimum of a dozen people working a ship of that size even to take it out for trials.

Yes he had a crew with him, but he was qualified to skipper any size ship in any waters in any weather having commanded a destroyer in WW2. The owner would then hire a local skipper for his own voyage, which in most cases meant short island hopping then mooring for a few days and a few parties.

We were sailing in the east med a few years back, and one of the marinas we came into (Marmaris perhaps?) had a big super yacht in...not as big as this, but pretty impressive. We wandered over to have a look at it, and got chatting to the rather pleasant crew member in skimpy little daisy dukes who was cleaning the anchor with a brillo pad. She was a Kiwi, and turned out that she was crew, her boyfriend (:()was skipper and a friend was mate, and they basically spent their time swanning round the med on this thing, looking after it for the owner. Never found out what he did/who he was, but from what they said he basically gave them a schedule (Monaco for the Grand Prix, Venice for Easter, Athens for his wedding anniversary etc) and as long as they were there on time, and the boat was always ready to go at 24 hours notice, they had (claimed to have) pretty much free reign. I guess they didn't get paid a lot, but nice way to spend a bit of time.....
