Everyone back home whining about the weather
 

My friends and family are acting like they live in the middle of the Sahara lately. Go to check out the temps and it's barely going above 75F/23C
Meanwhile all Brits are talking about is their lawns going brown, hedgehogs dying of thirst, getting heatstroke, it still being hot at night, everythings melting, how they're starting to miss the rain and it being far too hot to go to work.
They don't know they're born!

It may not be the Sahara, but it's now been nearly 2 months without a drop of rain, which we're just not used to in the UK. It's also been far hotter than 23 degrees here, not sure where they are but in the south east we've had weeks of 28-31 degrees, until today when thankfully it's dipped to 24 (although due to be 28 again tomorrow, sigh). Fed up of watering and desperately rain dancing here............:lol:

We are lucky here in north Norfolk, high twenties is the highest it has been - and, crucially, it has cooled down nicely every night. It's the drought that is really radical though - it is unbelievably arid out there, lawns really are completely brown now. I have been watering my allotment every single evening for many weeks now. It is turning out to be a good gardening season for almost everything, so long as you can water liberally. I'm using about 120 litres of water per day, and that's using a watering can & quite a walk to the standpipe! You can imagine what people with hosepipes are using.

Its the same here in Vancouver. A heatwave is 80f and above but when your body is used to cool wet weather 80f feels pretty damn hot. Lol

Flip side is now I dont feel cold at 50F but when I lived in San Diego that felt cold but 80F didnt feel hot.

I can understand about folk complaining in Britain when very few places have AC.

Agree with what Jack said. They don't have A/C typically and also the humidity makes it feel hotter.
The A/C is broken in my car and it's been just under 100F on and off the past week - and it's not too bad.

But some Brits are terrible at drinking water. When my parents or friends visit, I have to badger them to drink water.
It's especially important at high altitude.

Yes - I couldn't believe that when I saw it!! I grew up there and they usually get a lot of rain!! Talked to a family member there on Sunday and was told it has been very dry. They even had gorse fires on the Glenshane Pass which is the main road through the Sperrin mountains from Belfast to Londonderry.

It is surprising, but the general consensus seems to be that, since rainfall for the year as a whole is still above average, most areas still have water reserves at or above normal for this time of year. (I believe precipitation Jan-Apr was very high, it's only June till now that rainfall is at or close to zero.)

I chuckle at what friends back home are muttering, but then remember how it felt with houses without AC and just not being used to it!

That's our average temp here in Mississippi. Thankfully after a 3 week period of no rain, we had a few thunder boomers and torrential rains last week.

I've never had AC in the US. Some years you wish you had AC (weeks on end of highs in the 90s and nightime lows around 70,) other years you realise AC would be an unnecessary extravagance. Very few people in my town have AC (northern New York.)

I've been in the UK for nearly a month now, and it has been HOT. That coming from someone who is used to the temperature in Queensland. We've just done two weeks in Bristol of 28 degrees each day, with a couple of days hitting 30, For the UK that is serious. No Air con, few fans. schools insisting pupils wear full uniforms including blazers. No screens on windows and patio doors so most houses have to be closed up at night.
Add to that the simple fact that those who live in the UK all year round just aren't used to these temps and so don't understand things like moving slowly, don't try and do too much, don't spend too much time outside etc.
The only blessing is that the recent heat hasn't been humid
