Yes, the upside of our power outages is at least no neighboring nation is invading!!

Apparently we have the Greenland Block to blame for this

Disappointingly chilly March to produce only its 4th & 5th days of 50+-degree highs Tues & Wed; long spell of chilly weather to follow; Greenland blocking to drive the cooldown | WGN-TV

We had high winds predicted for today - wasn't expecting much - we lost power about 4pm, not expected to be restored till tomorrow afternoon. Plus we lost several big trees in our woods. Our neighbor lost even more....

And yesterday I was out raking leaves!

Yay! Power restored tonight. I was dreading not getting my coffee tomorrow morning...

Glad your power came back on relatively quickly, Robin! It was VERY windy & rainy here yesterday, but the wind wasn't nearly the problem as during those last few March Nor'easters (when we did lose power).

What a retarded spring we have this year! The locals say the seasons always lag here on the northeast coast, but in my 6+ years I don't remember the daffodils ever being this late to bloom....

Hmmm, OK then. Somehow I'd thought it was the Polar Vortex.... But now I know exactly which bit of northern geography to blame!

We had a blizzard yesterday, fortunately mostly melted away today. My neighbor's been chainsawing all day, he had seven or eight full size pine trees down in the storm a few days ago - a couple of them within a few feet of the house. He has one of those outdoor boilers to heat his house, so the trees won't be wasted..

Feels like an endless winter here on the New England coast where I am. We haven't seen the sun for the last week. 37F/3C right at the moment, with the wind chill factor bringing the outdoors 'feel' down to 28F/-2C....

Garden report: Crocus are OK, but my daffs are struggling to bloom, as are hyacinths--both which are usually starting their full flower stint now. I think my hydrangeas are scuppered for another summer--buds were starting last month but they froze & dropped off. Have no idea whether/when to plant cold-season veggies like peas, kale....

I didn't think it was a very bad winter -- until March! And even then it hasn't been that bad for us. I think it is frustrating because we came so close to getting away with it and then the storms came when we were expecting spring!

We have lovely blue skies and sunshine here today, but it is cold again, in the 20s overnight, and a high of 40 expected. Spring must reach you earlier than us -- the snowdrops are flowering and my daffodils are peeking through the ground, despite rather too frequent dustings of snow, but aren't very far behind their usual schedule. I am worried about my hydrangeas, but it seems that every year they lose buds, so this is no different from the norm. Pruned the hydrangeas that have to be cut back hard in the spring during the warm spell two weeks ago, so they will be fine. As to your cold-season veg, I can't help you -- my site has proven useless where in-ground veg are concerned, so I only do chilies, tomatoes, and herbs in pots on the deck these days, and they don't go in until Memorial Day weekend.

PS On our walk this morning, saw the marsh marigolds' greenery starting to appear at the edge of the river, so have broken out my favorite spring avatar in their honor!

Another blizzard this morning - short lived though. We are getting highs around 40, lows around 20 now and for the next several days.

Our snowdrops always start flowering late Feb, and they're still in peak bloom now. So they were actually flowering under several feet of snow for much of that time. Crocuses are really good this year, now they are past their best. Daffodils are up, but ours never flower till May - even the early ones.

You're spot on. I think a large measure of my frustration (veering into occasional outrage) with this so-called spring this year is due to the "backwardness" of it all. As you say, we almost got away with a very mild winter indeed, then March whacked us round the head & sent us spinning with 5?6? nor'easters coming one after another, not all of them necessarily bad... BUT all of them disruptive of plans & somewhat anxiety-producing.

Yes, we finally have sunshine today but unfortunately doesn't make a dent in the bitter windy cold. The husband & I are out in the garden trying to chop up some fallen branches as large as trees, so we take frequent tea breaks.... We still have odd bits of snowbank lingering here & there.

We do have a bit of a mild micro-climate going here at our house, but only because I've tended to plant so many of my flower bulbs close to the foundation, or the stone walls, where they're somewhat sheltered from the cold & wind plus get toasted with radiated sun warmth.

Nice avatar!

My harbinger of spring (besides snowdrops, crocus, daffs) have started up their song - the spring peepers! (Tiny frogs in the wetlands & woods, for those who don't know.) They had actually begun just before the last snowstorm, then stopped for a few nights (dead? poor things), but now they're singing again....

I just took up the snow guide poles, though neighbours still have theirs in the ground. I am so sick of them, I'm optimistically (or foolishly) declaring the end of "significant" snowfall.

Yes, our snowdrops were up in late February, too, though not in full flower till just about the time the second nor'easter swept in. They're still blooming undaunted now, amid the more recent crocus; though some seemed temporarily crushed under wet snow & fallen branches, it wasn't for long.

That's why I like the snowdrops, they are very hardy and persistent. They keep picking themselves up and putting out new flowers. We got ours from White Flower Farms, down in your neck of the woods, about eighteen years ago - they've multiplied and spread nicely. (Meanwhile we bought other snowdrop bulbs from other places, they flowered a year or two and disappeared.)
