Emergency Radio Broadcasts
We got our first real emergency broadcast today. It just occurred to me a problem with watching internet TV. You do not get emergency broadcasts over the TV. So when cutting the cable you should probably buy an emergency radio.
It was a winter weather advisory and flash flood warning. I guess summer is over.

Winter weather advisory!
I wish we had one of those, instead we are still stuck in the 90's here in St Louis

Where are you located? I'm hoping it's heading this way. I wouldn't mind some cold, 95 in mid Sept is a tad ridiculous.

We get them so often that I think we mostly ignore them. Not really what was intended I'm sure!

We have a wind up radio, which we use when we have power outages. Back in 1998, when we had the big ice storm here so power out for ten days or more, our local public radio station broadcast essential public service information just before the hour - so you knew when to turn the radio on.
As for relying on smart phones and the like, I see you can buy a battery charger that runs on a wood fire.

There is also a Presidential broadcast alert that is not blockable on any US mobile phone or tablet with mobile connect capabilities. Enacted by Congress in 2006 the Warning, Alert, Response and Network Act has, thankfully, never been used.
