Economic Impact Payment by prepaid debit card

I got one of these debit cards instead of a cheque or a direct debit to my account:

I was sure it was a scam when I opened the envelope. They make it so hard to access the money without incurring fees except for spending it in shops. I know that was the reason for it, but I don't understand how this is any easier for the government than a cheque. I went through a long sequence of creating accounts and such to do an ACH transfer to my bank on Sunday, still waiting for the money to show up (because banks like us to think that electrons don't work on weekends).

I have yet to fully understand why in his electronic age, banks cannot manage to do anything on weekends, you'd think by now everything could be near instant.

Maybe someone in charge has a vested interest in whatever company or bank is running the debit card program and needed to throw some $$ their way.

I just got mine in the mail a few minutes ago. It is in the form of a check from the IRS.
