Default DVD Encryption

Does anyone know of any free, safe software for decrypting DVDs? I have a set of DVDs I want to burn copies of to give to me family, but they're copyrighted.

And please don't give me any b.s. about it being illegal. I bought the damn dvds and if I want to give people free copies that is my decision IMHO. It's not like I'm selling them or charging for them.

If you don't want to post any links on here, please feel free to send me a PM. Don't know if this thread is considered illegal, but if it is I apologize in advance.

Now there's a question. Certainly works on XP, though!

While I'm thinking about it, also get yourself a copy of DVD Decrypter. Sometimes you need to rip the original with this rather than DVDShrink (then use DVDShrink to process it) if it has the latest protection -- Sony are b*st*rds sometimes!

DVD Decrypter is awesome as it allows you to Decrypt and Shrink on the fly. I've used it to rip a DVD that was encrypted while using Shrink simultaneously. Plus it's free.

More and more DVDs are developing new keys that the software cannot break. It's really a pain.

I've had to convert some DVDs to mp4 with the program Handbrake. You lose a bit though in doing so (but it is a much smaller file)

dvdshrink and encryter mentioned are great, but they don't work on all dvd's, but will for most....but i'd use nero encode to shrink the dvd's down as I think that is faster than dvd shrink.

Dunno if it's all available for Vindoze but typing something along the lines of:

mencoder dvd://# -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1 -alang en -oac copy -o /dev/null
mencoder dvd://# -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=1800 -alang en -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3 -o movie.avi

("#" is the number of the dvd title that you want to rip)

in a Linux terminal with mplayer suitably installed ALWAYS rips the specified title. However, it's an overnight job for a full movie.

Try RipIt4Me for those tricky disks if you can find it. http://www.ripit4me.org/ is down at the moment apparently. See also http://www.videohelp.com/tools/RipIt4Me

[edit] I think it's been cease and desisted, but you can still find it...

Not seen Handbrake before. I'll give it a spin. Cheers!

'FastDVD copy' is the simplest for Mac OS. Its a single click to copy the DVD. It allows the basics likes compressing larger movies to fit on a standard single layer DVD, stripping extras, removing navigation restrictions etc.

http://www.fastdvdcopy.com/

I had a pirate copy of it, but I just installed a new larger HD in my laptop and need to go through all the patching of the program to crack it again. Maybe I should just buy it

I don't have any issue with what you are doing but the above statement really is quite ridiculous.

you own the physical dvds but you don't own the rights to the content and therefore its certainly not your decision to give out free copies

like i said, i don't give 2 shits what you do, i am just flummoxed by your reasoning

not too different from me saying 'i'm going to shoot my neighbour dead for playing his music too loud, I bought the right to have peace and quiet and if i need to kill him then thats my right IMHO'. or at least how any judge would see it (harsher penalty for the latter obviously)

www.doom9.org is a good website for ripping and encoding tools...
