Well the removals are booked and the packing boxes arrived today, although we cant offically pack it ourselves we can at least start moving things around a bit. The sofa, chairs 1 set of bedroom furniture and various other bits got re-homed at the weekend to family now disguised as vultures ! We have made decisions over major electrical items and will be leaving all nut the PC here in the UK.

What I would like to know form all you already living yur life in the USA is did you take small electrical items like bedside lamps, clock radios etc with you and use adapters to start with ? Whilst I realsie I could replace all off these things relatively cheaply in the US its seems a lot of hassle when the ones here work perfectly well, whether or not they will out there I suppose we will just have to wait and see. Is it too much hassle with adapters all the time?
For the ladies out there (not being sexist... honest) what about things like hair dryer. I seem to remember last time we took one away because of the voltage change it was a very light blow dry which took forever:huh:

We have a container booked for our own use and have downsized it to the smallest but space still will be ok so just wondering what you all did ?

When I left the UK I didn't take any electronics with me except my computer and laptop, which I knew would work in the US. Many other items were cheaper to replace than they were to ship, and I didn't want to deal with the hassle of transformers and adapters.

Hi,
We left all the big things apart from the PC and laptop. I brought my stereo, which is fine for playing the radio or ipod, but hasn' enough power to play CDs. Don't bother bringing lamps, they are soooooooooooo weak its not worth it. Also we have had fun and games with our alarm clock.. it keeps slowing down/speeding up, I guess we need an american one :)

Hairdrier I would def buy here as I was always under the impression that if something heats up, you shouldn't be messing around with adapters, just in case.

I did bring our liquidisor and food processor, both of which work, but much slower, so it doens't work well on really hard stuff, but still fine for soups. We are only here for a couple of yrs, so decided buying new everything just isn't worth it.

Hope that kinda helps :-) By the way, it may be easier to buy a whole load of adapters in the UK, as they seem to be pretty expensive here.

DH ended up having his small things sold at a carboot sale. Shipping is expensive if you're the one paying for it. His larger things were posted on his work's "classified" site. What couldn't be sold was given away to those that helped him and the charity shop.

dont bother bringing you hairdryer, i brought mine over and it takes days to dry your hair with it, my boyfriends farts have more hot air!!!:p

hair dryer, get new, cheaper than getting a transformer to work for it etc...same with kitchen stuff...

the company paid for our 40 foot container so we could take whatever we wanted. We actually took very little electronics. I gave 90% away- some to family but a tonne on the local freecyle site.
Most of the stuff we took was pc related (we have 2 fairly decent rigs as we both use them a lot), but had checked that they would be suitable for the lower voltage. Then when we got here we just cot off the plugs and swapped on a US plug from home depot and they went fine.

I did bring a bedside radio alarm but its DAB - so i havent even tried to plug it in. Simply brought a $20 one from walmart. Wish i had given it away to someone know as its a waste here.
Got a hairdryer, kettle, toaster, washing machine, dryer, etc form various places (H Greggs, Macys, sears,... too many to mention).
