I didn't comment as while I thought the story funny-weird-sad, I couldn't for the life of me think of anything at all to say. Ive tried to edit the op, but no edit button is appearing.... :) |

The deaths of Jason Ackerman and Sara Rydman, both 21, appear to be accidental, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Major Bob Schrader said. Their bodies were found yesterday partially inside a deflated helium balloon at the entrance of a condominium complex a few kilometres north of Tampa. The 2.4-metre-diameter balloon was used to advertise the complex. "It was more a fun thing they thought they were doing," said Linda Rydman, whose daughter was found dead. "You know how you blow up the balloon and suck the helium." The county medical examiner said today the cause of death will not be released until toxicology tests are completed. Inhaling helium can quickly lead to brain damage and death from lack of oxygen, according to the Compressed Gas Association, which develops safety standards in the gas industry. |
Re: Helium balloon trick...
The cause of death though is pretty obvious, oxygen starvation of the brain. Helium is non-toxic and unreactive. The deaths would have been pretty much painless, they probably felt a high prior to losing consciousness.

Carbon dioxide has the same effect on the brain (in high concentrations), CO2 is heavier than air though, so won't be found in a balloon outside a condo. When a large quantity of deep water comes to the surface CO2 comes out of solution and can be very dangerous ... leads to loss of life among wildlife and human communities.
