Do you keep up?

Just an out of interest question.

Do you keep up with the 'happenings' back home? When I very first moved here I did, then for a while I didn't really bother, CNN was about my only news, now I am again keeping up with the regional news and the little community news paper that is posted online once per week. Maybe because I am going through one of my home sick spells... who knows.

I usually keep up with what's going on in the country generally.

Re: Do you keep up?

I don't make a conscious effort to keep up with news from the UK but, since US news both in print and on TV is so awful I get most of my news from reading the Economist and from the BBC web site so I inevitably pick up some UK news as part of that.

Is the US media biased about what goes on over there? Do they try to "Dumb down" the news for local T.V?

Nope, its just that most Americans prefer their news with sugar on it. ;)

I read the Telegraph online every day now and listen to NPR in the car usually between CD's.

Every Saturday morning, Radio 4 live goes on the computer and is broadcast thru the house all day. Oops, look at the time - time to tune in again. :)

Interesting comment - I find that it's always about who was killed overnight, crime, natural disasters, etc. Never thought of it as overly sugary aside from maybe a local special interest story.

One difference between UK and US media is that as far as I know the USA posesses nothing like the Daily Mail, whose primary agenda seems to be to run the UK down. Any mainstream print publication in the USA which started off down that road would probably get run out of town fairly swiftly.

yeah whenever I can.... mostly snippet stuff.
My mum even went the length to buy me a subcription to "The Week" in pity of lacking current affairs over here :D.. (bless her). Every week I have it sitting in the mail box.

Re: Do you keep up?

Back in UK I used to read the Daily Mail, so sometimes I jump onto their website but I have found that lately it's gone a bit crappy with far too much showbiz and celebrity gossip. So I have taken to reading the Telegraph for some proper news, of late!
I also like listening, via the web, to the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 which normally discusses daily current affairs and I love listening to the various regional accents of the people who phone in to the show, makes me a tad homesick but in a nice way!
Oh and if I'm in the mood, Sunday Love Songs with Steve Wright, all together now "aahhhh" (or pass the bucket, whichever way you're feeling :D )

I know a few Americans who watch the BBC World News, they all seem to like the style reporting, more factual I guess.

Yes I like to read the BBC news on line and check out a few of the rag's, it's just part of my daily routine while on the computer.

I was on a plane once and the passenger next to me was American and he commented on the in-flight news programme announcer. Turns out this passenger was into media production and all he could do was criticise the way the camera angle made the English announcer's head shiny as well as the poorness of the technical aspects of the presentation. Not a word about the way in which the news was presented.
Its about image and presentation rather than substance, it seems. Just watch CNN or MSNBC and that much is clear. Thats why I like public radio or BBc America for news.

Yes, the news here is far too sleek and polished - all the women presenters look the same, same hair style and dress sense... Saying that, I do watch Fox News Chicago to make some sort of conscious effort to find out what going on around me. The weather is big news here! They're obsessed by it, and there's me thinking us Brits used to harp on about the weather all the time...

I subscribe to Private Eye, I think it's £38 p.a. I really appreciate how good their exposes are now.

Generally though I don't keep up with the home news that well. I look at the BBC online and sometimes the Guardian. My husband occasionally likes to read out horror stories from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

The TV news here I find hard to follow, it chops around with the items in a strange order like a massacre followed by a cute doggie story, not used to the gurning presenters yet. I haven't found an equivalent of 'Newsnight' which discusses broader issues.

Check the BBC web-site every day (for the football) and usually check the local news for Manchester as well.

Re: Do you keep up?

I spent 7 years living in Amsterdam and checked BBC online every day, but since living here I don't bother. I got tired of feeling like I was reading a tabloid, as the BBC news site was turning into one in my opinion.
But we do have Radio 1 on our newly acquired Sirius subscription so I suppose we'll be hearing some of it soon!

I think it's more that there's sod all real global news, it's just a round up on a bomb in iraq and that's it. It's all very regional, fairly biased and none offensive. Fox doesn't count admittedly.

As for do I keep up, kind of. I check the local newspapers every now and again, especially the footie team, but that's depressing me, so I've not bothered much since December as they've done shite. My mother also sends me the odd clippings from local papers and the odd copy of Private Eye as well as some other bits and pieces now and again :)

Oh, does anyone bother with newsnight, prime ministers question time and the like? How about Have I Got News for You? :D

I read The Telegraph on line most days, sometimes look at the Times and the Guardian.
I read our old local rags on line every few weeks but they make me homesick.

I listen to radio 2 if I'm in the study. I keep meaning to try and find out about wireless speakers so I can hear it in other rooms.
