To answer your question: Because thats what they do here!!
Returns queue is longer than the checkout one in most places.
Besides, if no-one returned anything, then that mean more regifts for you!

We were talking about the Death Penalty.
OF COURSE I think it should still be in place for people who 'regift.'
Take unwanted presents people have given them (ungrateful pigs) and 'give' it to some unsuspecting chump instead of going out and buying one.
No trial. No jury. No appeals.
