Cutting the grass
Aaaaagh, bloody American lawn mower! I have been trying to start our petrol lawn mower for ages. My husband is deployed so cutting the grass is my job, I can't pull that bloody cord fast or hard enough to get it started. So I went in the shed and found our lovely British hover mower, that glides gracefully along with the push of a little finger. So can I just buy a converter plug and just try and use it.

You should research the power issues. It might not be 110-220v, which would mean you would need not only a plug convertor (3->2) but also a step up transformer.
But before we go there, a couple of questions about your gas mower:
1) is there a little rubber 'ball' or something in the front of the mower? You might need to 'prime' the mower before you start it by pushing that 3 times (to push a little gas into the system before you pull the cord.
2) Is there a 'safety' catch? Usually a bar on the handle that has to be 'squeezed' next to the handle (you have to hold it the whole time you are mowing). This is a safety shutoff in case your mower falls out of your hands while you are mowing it stops running. Sometimes people forget this when they are trying to start the mower.
3) Is there some kid in the neighborhood who you can ask for help giving it a pull? If 1&2 are not working, then it might need someone to give it a really good yank (or service).

Re: Cutting the grass
I say this tongue in cheek, Lawn Service. I know what you are saying, been there done that but when the neighbour came with a leaflet after witnessing me struggle, I took it. Don't do anything to harm yourself i.e. using a UK hover mower or trying to get the other one going. My advice would be make sure that you are so obviously struggling that anyone will come to your rescue and it is honestly a great way to meet the neighbours.
