In my travels, I almost always just withdraw cash from an ATM when I get there. There is usually one in the airport, then you are one small purchase away from having small bills/coins, which always come in handy. Mind you, I did choose a bank account that has no fees for foreign cash withdrawals for just this purpose (they even refund any fees charged by the ATM owner!). The only time I have bought currency in advance in recent memory was when I went to Brazil, which I think was on the advice of a local colleague.

Speaking of which, if your local colleagues say cash, then have cash. You don't want to be the person who can't put in for lunch/tip/etc. because you are only carrying a card

Not a conspiracy.. watch the video
The video clearly states the focus on specified destinations rather than merely being outbound.

I know nothing about the Apple credit card, however any bank/ institution that offers any service that includes an FX currency component can (though not necessarily does) engage in misleading marketing, as it can be "true" that there are "no fees" but then the spread on the exchange rate (difference between the exchange rate that is applied to your sell transactions and, in theory at least, the exchange rate on that is offered to customers making the opposite transction), can be significantly disadvantageous. E.g. buying EUR100 for USD102 (published mid rate) + $2 fee, for a total cost of $104 v buying EUR100 for USD106 "with no fees", for a total cost of $106. .... Caveat emptor!

Credit card companies usually use the rate set by the card network without adding any markup so if you have a card with no foreign transaction fees it's usually the best way to spend abroad.
