Crappiest place in America you've visited
For me this is a toss-up between Butte, MT which is (or was) the most toxic place in the US and Lake Charles, LA, which has a sulphur mine and appears to be inhabited by people who've clearly breathed in too much of it.
My mom thinks that Plymouth, NC is the crappiest place in America and admittedly she's seen more of it than I have. My friend reeled off various towns in West Virginia that she's been to that were pretty awful apparently. (I have to say I quite like WV but I haven't been to all the mining towns and so on).

I kind of liked Butte, MO...we walked around where the old mines were and I though it was pretty interesting.

Re: Crappiest place in America you've visited
I went thru a couple of years hating being here when we first arrived. Every time I went away, it seemed to be to somewhere nicer than where we lived and I wished I was staying there instead of coming home. The only place I went to that didn't make me feel like that was Memphis. I found it depressing, even Beale Street which seemed to be closed when we were there! But given that Houston is officially not shit, thats not really any bad reflection on Memphis

Williston North Dakota, what a sh*t hole that was. The place is the center of the Dakota oil fields, no one told us that when we booked into a hotel there on our trip across the states. Dirty hotel rooms, nasty restraunts we even avoided the McDonalds there.. If you ever have the pleasure to drive US 2 keep driving when you hit North Dakota.

Gary Indiana
and as someone who has been to Detroit and Flint Michigan, that's saying a lot.

Probably Atlantic City, NJ. Had to do some survey work there a few years ago and that place has/had a few seriously grim neighbourhoods.
