I don't, that's the point. ..... With a steak dinner I'll drink 3-4 12oz bottles of beer, which would be the same volume as 1½-2 bottles of wine, with 2-3 times the alcohol, and 2-3 times the cost even for a fairly cheap wine v a good beer, ..... and all for something that I find less enjoyable than beer!

Hypothetically wine + a side of water, would reduce the cost and the alcohol, but would obviously reduce the pleasure even more.

That's why I only buy one brand of cider.

There is a place that is a 2 block walk from my place that serves real good Chinese food for $7 for a large plate and $7 for a carafe of wine. After the first glass, all wine is drinkable.. But even in a good restaurant, I don't pay more than $20 per bottle and often since Merlot is a blend, it's one of the cheaper wines.

I'm glad that you enjoy your tipple. I prefer the taste of beer.

A nice Shiraz for me, too -- I enjoy the Aussie Rosemount.

A nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for me, especially if it's a Marlborough. I also enjoy a few margaritas, blue Hawaiians, tequila sunrises, during the summer.

I used to be able to drink nearly any white wine, but I've become more of a snob as I've got older.

Despite my earlier curmudgeonly post in which I stated I would only drink French, Italian or Spanish wine, I opened a bottle of Matua Sauvignon Blanc yesterday. It is superb! Very refreshing straight from the fridge on a sunny hot afternoon. It says "Marlborough" on the label, which I recalled seeing in your post. I assume that is a region in NZ, must admit I don't know anything about NZ wines. I think I'll go and look it up in my Jancis Robinson wine book! (Procrastinating, I'm meant to be preparing some stuff for meeting with financial advisor tomorrow )

I like a bottle of Matua too, the Marlborough region does some great wines, and they are very reasonably priced. Bev-Mo usually has some great offers on them, I like Wild South and Cloudy Bay, but I don't think I've tried a bad wine from that region.

The Matua is $11.90 here in northern NYS. I think I saw it for about $10 in Vermont. I've kept my price limit at about $10 for a bottle and about $15 for 1.5 litres. However I set that about ten years ago so probably time to add a generous inflation factor!

The Jancis Robinson Oxford Companion to Wine has a very good overview of NZ and about a page on the Marlborough region. Apparently the other notable wine from there is pinot noir, also there are notable Rieslings. Makes me want to visit New Zealand. And I'm going to see about those Marlborough Pinot noirs next time I go into Ye Olde Liquor Store. (Yes, that's actually what it's called. In New York we have a quaint law that forbids chains of liquor stores, so they're all mom & pop operations here.)

I used to love real ale in the UK and never thought I would adapt to the chilled fizzy beer here. I really love US craft beers, especially IPAs. It started off by buying whatever multipack was in Costco (Sam Adams, Harpoon, Long Trail) and then I was hooked - my current favourite is Two Road Brewery in Stratford CT. Worth a visit if you're on i-95!

Being a Somerset boy, I still partake in a pint of proper cider (that looks like someone washed their pants in it) when I'm visiting my parent.

I have a bottle of Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in front of me as I write. It's slipping down nicely. No idea where I bought it from but most likely in the $5-$10 range.

RE my earlier comment about ciders - I could have sworn I bought a regular cider alongside a couple of bottles of Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer - but I can't find it. Anyway, the ginger beer was sparkling as expected but went down well - what more could you want, a stomach soother and alcohol in one! I dislike fizzy ciders and only found one non-carbonated (import) in Bevmo but can never remember which one it was... any ideas, or suggestions for others that are mainstream? Like jaffy23 I enjoy proper cider, one that rots you from the inside out. But I suspect that's far too nasty for the US!
