Nah - don't bother. Just vote in as many places as you are registered. I've heard so much about voter fraud the past four years I'm sure at least half the population are doing it. Especially immigrants. 😉

PS. I've never deregistered from any place I left. No idea if I'm still on the voter rolls in those places. I still have a valid Florida drivers license so I could probably show up in my old district and vote there, but it's kinda far. BTW - that's another point, if you get a license in a new state, does that invalidate your previous state DL, or are you supposed to turn that in like your vehicle license plates?

We never de-registered from any place we left, and we lived in over a dozen places during our life in the USA. We changed State 3 times (Texas-Louisiana-Texas) and I’m pretty sure we surrendered our State licence each time to avoid having to retake the test.

There is an approved way to do this, but it isn’t too easy - I suspect they want to discourage accidental or malicious cancellation..

In order to have your name removed from the voting rolls, pursuant to N.Y. Election Law section 5-400, you must send a written letter to the local board of elections where you lived requesting to have your registration cancelled. You must send a written letter, you cannot accomplish this via email. Contact information for all local boards is available at the county board of elections page.
In general, I’m guessing most people don’t bother to cancel registration. As long as you don’t attempt to vote in your former jurisdiction, there’s no problem. They probably weed people out on a regular basis. (I think it is this perfectly normal & harmless phenomenon of dead/moved away people on the rolls, that have fed much of the fervor about possible election fraud in recent years.)

When they issue a DL they automatically cancel any existing license.

Thank you! In principle, I would be okay to leave it, but I have never been happy receiving numerous campaign texts/calls at election time. I will enjoy it even less when I don't live there anymore!

I will be reading very carefully when registering this time and will not be giving my phone number if I can possibly avoid it.

It was really easy to deregister in Florida, assuming of course that one can use the internet and is intelligent enough of a citizen to recognize their democratic duties...
