Christmas cards say "no" to going back
Since mentioning to one or two family members and friends that we are thinking it might be best to return to the UK, it seems like everyone is intent on putting us off. Most Christmas cards I have received to date all say
"no dont, not the same" or "are you mad? nothing in the UK anymore" or "UK is c**p now" Wow! either they really feel this or dont want us back! Ha Ha!But when I read most of the posts on this forum most people who have gone back are happy that they have done it. Strange....cant get my head around it and it makes it all the more difficult to make decisions. Not that we will rely only on what others think as their views are only part of the decision process.
No reason for this post except to share.
Hope everyone has a great Christmas wherever they may be.

It really isnt as bad as people make out. Media hype and their obsession with painting gloom and doom are heavily responisble for the psyche of the British public.
Of course there are problems just as there are globally with the recession and stuff, but somehow the British love to paint themselves as worse than anywhere else. They get some sick pleasure out of it i am sure.
I was watching an interesting segment on Sky News last night. A top UK recruitment specialist was saying that this recession is going to be a "white collar" problem. He said that in the past the massive job losses normkally came from the blue collar sector, but this time it will be the high end of the job market suffering most and that he is seeing INCREASES in vacancies in many lower paid jobs and also increases in middle management areas. It will very in teresting to see if this is the case in the long term.
But honestly, i have not long come back. Life is pretty much the same. You can still choose the kind of life you want to live in UK if you are prepared to go live in the right area for YOU.

Moving anywhere in this economic climate is not a good idea. THe Uk is projected to suffer the worst in the EU economically.

Re: Christmas cards say "no" to going back
It's two different streams of thought. We're over here sitting in the sun dreaming about going home. Our friends and family are living the current daily nightmare life over there and being heavily influenced by the highly politically biased reports in the press. Unfortunately this does create an extremely negative frame of mind and yes for sure, all my Christmas cards read 'don't come back' too.
The problem is that i would find it difficult to be amongst people who see life through such a narrow lens at the moment. I find living here unstimulating in terms of conversation so going home to the UK to be whinged at would not suit me at all. I can't cope with any form of negativity when there is always an upside to consider. I will end up slapping someone for being miserable.
This current economic crisis is the shake up the world needed to have. It's not dire yet and it might never be. What will happen though is that there will be a major shake up and new priorities and opportunities will emerge. I've just created work opportunities in my own business.
I won't be returning to the UK until things settle a little purely because of the current mood.

Jerseygirl just beat me to it! I was just about to post that we are returning to the UK after nearly a year in Canada and most of our family and friends think we're crazy. It is disconcerting to hear those comments when we're trying to make such a big decision work. But as Jerseygirl said, none of them have lived abroad and really don't appreciate what it feels like to need to go home.
Good luck with your decision and I hope it all works out for you whatever you choose.

When I'm in the UK people often say they wish they could move away from this dump...*insert other suitable insults*. I always ask them if they've ever lived overseas...then smile smuggly to myself.

The media, particually the newspapers, but also tv with 24 hour news stations etc must take most of the blame but also, so many people are taken in by all this that their whole mood and subseqently that of the country also goes into some deep depression when in reality, for most, its not half as bad as many think.
I was back in the UK in June and will be back for good in 3 or 4 months time. I simply cant wait to get away from this dull, sterile, bland backwater of a country that is Australia

Exactly...........................most people in the UK simply do not appreciate what living in the UK has to offer. I'd take no notice whatsoever of these people who know nothing of what it is like to live overseas.

I don't think it's a case of not experiencing a alternative lifestyle, it's reading articles like the one below, which is well witten and factual but doesn't help improve the mood. Clearly, the UK needs a new government with some very radical policies.

Re: Christmas cards say "no" to going back
As I said in another post somewhere, our friends are all pleased we're going back, and the one who's done it -- gone from Canada to the UK -- -said it was the best thing ever.
My sister did once say she thought it odd. But then she added that no one she knows wants to leave, so perhaps it wasn't.
I suppose different parts of the population feel differently? I dunno. Most of our friends and family are teachers or engineers -- or retired from that. Even the teachers don't seem to be driven crazy by the kids. The administration and paper work -- that's a different matter!

Patrick O'Flynn is hardly unbiased when it comes to criticising the government or it's policies.
