And they're ahead of the game with "checks". I wonder when transfering money by writing the amount on a handy-dandy piece of paper and taking it to the bank, will catch-on in the UK?

It would probably need rebranding, perhaps giving it a French/European flavour by changing the "ck" at the end to "que".

I saw an article the other week saying they want to get rid of all paper monetary instruments including cash.

By second time I think he meant the War of 1812 which the US clearly lost. They declared war on Britain and came out of it with nothing to show except a burned down capital.
