Changing car colo(u)r
I'm contemplating having my Grand Am resprayed. I love the car, but I'm not bowled over by the colour (maroon). Also there are some scratches etc that would disappear with a respray. Would like a nice metallic green or something.
So, does anyone know, in Ohio, if you respray the car a different colour, do you have to notify the BMV about the change of colour? I remember that they ask you the colour when you register it, so....? |
Re: Changing car colo(u)r
Google is your friend:
Q5. What if the color of my vehicle changes? A5. Should a customer need to change the color of their vehicle (for example, if the automobile was painted a new shade), he or she may have it changed on their next transaction at the Deputy Registrar (the Deputy Registrar cannot change the color unless an actual transaction is performed). Or the customer may call 1-800-589-TAGS (1-800-589-8247) to have the color changed on the database; however, to view the color chart, the customer will have to view the chart online at http://bmv.ohio.gov/pdf_files/NCIC Color Codes.pdf. |
Re: Changing car colo(u)r
I don't know about Ohio, but in MA and ME, you did...which is daft as in MA there's only a selection of about 5 base colours, far more to select in ME. So it is a bit dumb around here :D
But how much is that going to cost you? When I saw the insurance work, the doors that were done were about $300-500 |
Re: Changing car colo(u)r
There's a world of difference between a good respray, an excellent respray and a $1000 job. My mate had a vintage Porsche done and I think he paid $15,000 to have it done perfectly (although I might be misremembering that).

We have re-painted a couple of our cars over the years, and nver the original color, we never had to contact anyone, the registration doesn't mention colour at all, only license plate number and VIN number.
