Angry Car Rental Prices (UK)

Been busy plotting my return visit to the Homeland, for when we can go. Car Rental Prices at Heathrow have just gone through the roof, since I was last over there. Quite a bit cheaper, though at Manchester. A Minivan is just priced ridiculous. As there will be 5 of us, plus luggage, it is something that we need,

On the Downside, I have a 360 mile Round Trip to Chicago O'Hare to catch a flight which will connect to Manchester via Dublin.

Hope everyone is well!

Jim.

Haven't booked anything yet, but, at Heathrow it was about $3,000 + Insurance, from several companies.

Seems to be a trend in many places with car rental prices through the roof. Seems the car rental companies last year when the pandemic started and business dropped off a cliff overnight they sold off rather large portions of their fleets, and now that demand is picking up, they don't have enough supply, and are having trouble buying more cars because there is some sort of chip shortage which is affecting car manufacturing.

In Hawaii people have resorted to renting Uhaul moving trucks instead, as its cheaper, based on some of the prices I have seen coming out of Hawaii, may even be cheaper to just buy a used car.

- Looks like Hawaii has come down in prices a bit, looking at June prices in the $150 to $200 per day range, still high but better than the $300+ range earlier in the year.

Anchorage has been hit hard by this, and I believe there are essentially no rental cars available for much of the summer. The local news did a story on it, and reading the online comments was interesting - several of the early comments were people saying they'd cancelled vacations because they couldn't get transport, then the later comments were all locals advertising their personal cars for rent on Turo at $200 a day or more.

I was looking at exactly that flight, to visit my son in Liverpool when possible. I've been wondering how long of a layover to allow between flights in Dublin, due to covid checks. I don't know if they've been having the huge wait times of hours and hours that they have at Heathrow. Especially on the return trip, when clearing US immigration in that cramped hall.

Do let us know how you get on.

Will do, if I choose that option. By far, the cheapest flights I've seen.

For our trip to Panama City (FL) in August the cheapest car I could find to rent was a 2 seater convertible, which is fine for my wife and I.

Things really are topsy-turvy right now.

No way

I'm seeing Avis rates at Minivan MVAR Dodge Caravan Daily, $34.75 Hourly, $11.58 Weekly, $208.50 Monthly. $729.75 As a State employee.

Shoots up to $206 a day with an
AAA rate

For Orlando in June using Expedia, price per day for mini vans range as low as $145/day with Thrifty and as high as high as $566/day with some no name rental agency.

Miami is even cheaper as low as $122 with Alamo.

Now this weekend in Orlando is pretty expensive, lowest rate $279 and as high as $785 per day.

Using expedia to compare prices.

Yeah I was under the impression i'd have to rent a car on my trip home to Malta this year and it was going to be expensive...around 300eur/week for a small car. Thankfully I was able to be added to the insurance on a family members car they were willing to lend me . for the insurance, whopping price of 40 eur for the year renting a car nowadays just seems super complicated.
