Car Insurance for private vehicle while visting the US
An American friend is permitting me to share her share the driving when
we go on a trip. Is the only way for me to get fully insured for
driving the vehicle via her insurance company? Or can I organise it
myself somehow?

Practically, through her insurance. Should not be an issue, US policy structure is very different, no equivalent of Insured Only Driving.
