California fires
Isn't there a thread on this yet? Anyway, been vaguely aware of this big tragedy over the last few days. Was it anticipated at all? Obviously California has been having many fires in recent years, but were any defences put in place in these populated areas or is it just too random?

Random as to when exactly it will happen, not random that it will happen.
I live in a similar sort of area well colder higher and probably drier and with wood it will rot, be lumbered or burn. Historically burn is more likely.

I hope that you are just being sarcastic but with over 42 dead and many still missing, levity about a higher power's punishment on innocent men, women and children is out of place.

Both of the current massive fires BTW are on private land. CA doesn't permit logging of private land without onerous permitting. So the fuel load builds and builds and......

Malibu seems to burn every few years. This seems about as predictable as hurricanes in Florida. Yeah, let's build hundreds of $10MM houses in a known tinderbox. That's a good idea.
