Bristollian colleague of mine stood up during a Corporate bullshit meeting here in CA, and declared he was going outside for a fag........
Much spluttering of water ensued!

From Brit/Yank version I happen to think 'fanny pack' is beyond funny!!

So, were you? More often than not when someone says hello to me I say 'Hey'. Must be the way I say it but very often I get 'Good thanks' as a reply.

I was explaining "norks" to an American and it made me realise how there just aren't as many fun slang words for things in America.

Cotrary to the threads title my arse starts twitching everytime I hear an American pilot say we will be airborne momentarily. I envisage a short hop and land again....but where...

I used to use the word nonce quite regularly, telling anyone who asked that it meant 'silly person'. I believed that I was right. Until an American friend of mine looked it up, which was an education for both of us.

Strangely, my dad (born 1911, in Australia) used to use the expression "for the nonce" quite often. Few probably understood him, too! I'll bet Americans are bemused by the word "numpty", as well.

Pretty sure this wasn't the meaning he had in mind - Urban Dictionary: nonce

Well, I've led a sheltered life, I guess: I've never heard of that meaning. Surely it's a mistake for "ponce"...?

Well, that's because the function of a US fanny is not the same as the function of a British fanny... most of the time...

No, but I know what it means. The Australian equivalent (noun) when I was a boy was "poof". There was no equivalent verb, that I can recall. Poncing about was poncing about, and that's all!

It's perfectly acceptable in Miami.
