Panasonic DMP-BD35K. Brilliant. The only downside to them is that blu-ray discs are a bit pricey right now but deals can be found.

Same as HDTV over regular TV, plus some other cool things like being able to access the menu structure while the disc is playing rather than having to go to a specific menu page, HD sound and online content.

Thank you for answering that question....phew, thought I was going to be forced in to confessing that i haven't the foggiest.

So my question is, for those that have this thingy, can you tell the difference when you are watching a blu-ray disc as opposed to an HD disc?

In my opinion, HELL YEAH! It's awesome. However, like HDTV not all titles are produced well so you don't always get a great picture. So far I've only got a few blu-ray movies but they are all significantly better looking than the DVD versions. The players also do a decent job of upconverting DVDs to HD. It's not anywhere near the quality of a blu-ray disc but it is an improvement compared to a DVD player.

Oh, big tip. Don't go spending stupid money on an HDMI cable like the $100+ monster ones. Get a cheap one under $10, you won't be able to tell the difference. You won't get a cheap one at any of the retail stores so you'll have to look around or get one from amazon.

Well if he argues that more expensive is better then tell him he's an idiot! HDMI is digital so it will either work or not work, none of the stuff that was important to older cables matters. Just make sure it supports 1080p which they all should and get the cheapest one you can find, like $5!
