IIRC that place you disliked - Swindon! Actually, a little further away where I work they sell pints for £2.65 in one pub and yet £3.15 just up the road. Mind you it is a bit of a snobbish town so the landlord of the latter knows he can get away with it. But just under £3 in the south west outside of city/tourist areas is normal.

Even in central London, off the beaten track, you can still get a good pint for just under £3.

I suppose it does have some sort of slightly unpleasant background flavour, pretty much the same as almost all mass market lagers. Wouldn't touch it if it were being given away for free.
