You're absolutely right Tonrob; chana dal is small dried chick peas.

Here is my version of chick pea curry - its delicious and really easy.

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons of olive oil
1 tin of chick peas
1 medium sliced onion finely chopped
1tsp of finely chopped gingerroot
1tsp of finely chopped garlic
half teaspoon of finely chopped green chillies
Quarter teaspoon of tumeric
half teaspoon of garam masala
half a tin of pureed tomatoes
handful of roughly chopped fresh corriander
salt - about half a teaspoon

Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the cinnamon and cloves. When the cinnamon starts to darken, add the onions and cook on medium heat until they begin to brown slightly. Add the garlic, ginger, chillies, turmeric and salt to the onions and then the tomatoes and stir well. Put the lid on the pot and leave to simmer for about 6 minutes or until the oil comes to the surface of the sauce - stir every now and again. Add the chick peas to the sauce and stir well and leave to simmer for a couple of minutes then add a quarter cup of warm water to the chick peas to make it a little soupy and leave it to cook for another 15 minutes on medium heat.
Once the curry is cooked, turn off the heat and add the garam masala and corriander. This curry tastes great with naan bread or rice.

Oops, forgot to say that for the chick pea curry you will need about 3 small sticks of cinnamon and 3 cloves :)

I've been a veggie for over 20 years now. One of the best cookbooks out there is Good Housekeeping's Vegetarian Cookbook, pretty simple recipes, but very tasty. For convenience foods I like the Morningstar stuff, or Trader Joes has tons of good stuff.

I bought some really good black bean burgers by Morning Star last week. I'm not vegetarian but like veggie burgers, would recommend these they are scrumptious and have, I thinkm, 18g of protein per burger.

I like Morningstar stuff but I don't eat/buy the stuff that's supposed to look like meat. I do buy Quorn when it's on special at my grocery store, otherwise it's too expensive for me. I am not a vegetarian but I do like vegetarian foods.

I e-mailed Quorn recently to complain about their fillets being tough (yes - I did defrost them before eating them!) and they sent me a whole shedload of coupons. Yay me! :)

Officially? A protein derived from the same fungus group as mushrooms.

Unofficially? Whatever you can imagine...

That's what they should put on the box.
