Ancestry DNA

re: Ancestry DNA
My FIL recently found a cousin he didn't know about using one of those DNA matching sites. His mother was adopted so almost nothing was known about her biological family, it seems that each of the children in her family was adopted by different families in different states, so there may be more cousins yet to come.

You can buy a Knight Industries Two Thousand chemical analyzer and attach it to your laptop.

Just read today that they're also trying to catch the Zodiac killer using genealogy website DNA, firstly I had no idea they even had the Zodiac's DNA in the first place but can you imagine if they catch the Zodiac using the same method? I'll be so damn shocked (and happy.)

I just did my test and despite a family line on paper of 50-50 Irish and German roots, the results came back saying "78% British".
I have been querying my mother incessantly about the milkman lately...

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that an English person has pure Saxon ancestry from folks who came over from Saxony in the sixth century. Would that English person, and some pure bred Saxon peasant in Germany, both be judged "100% German" by Ancestry dot com?
The whole thing sounds very unscientific and largely subject to semantics ...

re: Ancestry DNA
i wonder what they mean by "British" in this context. Historically, we were taught to think that British ancestry might signify Welsh, Scottish or Cornish ancestry, and that most English people are from Anglo-Saxon or Danish roots. More modern research suggests the "British" we're not eradicated by the invaders in the dark ages, but interbred with them.

The DNA sites would probably have a meltdown if they tested me, either that or plod would be knocking on the door. I wonder where they have us 'lukky heather' mongrels as originating?

The tree I am currently working on may well have Romany within it on the paternal 2xgrt grandparent side. The surname is a good match as well as the occupation etc.

There are an assortment of UK Romany projects on the go. One with Leicester Uni I think, if it is still running. I thought it was considered that Romany people originated from NW Asia. Not Eygpt as was previously thought. There is a Romany and Traveller FHS.
