This is why I tested. It has helped to pinpoint who my grandfather was. Sadly my Dad died in 2009 . He would have loved to have been able to do this.

I always wondered what the little round hole on the side of my laptop was for, those little slots on the side are the best Garibaldi holders ever...

You can buy a Knight Industries Two Thousand chemical analyzer and attach it to your laptop.

They can challenge it but surely there's not much they can say against it being 100% match to his DNA? They caught the BTK from obtaining a sample of his daughter's DNA from her pap smear test, I'm thinking if they can get away with doing that they'll sail through this one with it being a public site and all.
Just read today that they're also trying to catch the Zodiac killer using genealogy website DNA, firstly I had no idea they even had the Zodiac's DNA in the first place but can you imagine if they catch the Zodiac using the same method? I'll be so damn shocked (and happy.)

Instead of getting a message that you have a newly discovered 2nd cousin, it just links the two of you to Tinder?

I just did my test and despite a family line on paper of 50-50 Irish and German roots, the results came back saying "78% British".

I have been querying my mother incessantly about the milkman lately...

i wonder what they mean by "British" in this context. Historically, we were taught to think that British ancestry might signify Welsh, Scottish or Cornish ancestry, and that most English people are from Anglo-Saxon or Danish roots. More modern research suggests the "British" we're not eradicated by the invaders in the dark ages, but interbred with them.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that an English person has pure Saxon ancestry from folks who came over from Saxony in the sixth century. Would that English person, and some pure bred Saxon peasant in Germany, both be judged "100% German" by Ancestry dot com?

The whole thing sounds very unscientific and largely subject to semantics ...

Agree, makes no sense. I never call myself British I have a British Passport but I am Anglo Welsh if you want to be picky. Briton may make some sense.

It's based on shared characteristics between you and others who have taken the same test. The more test takers, the more accurate your results become over time.

Well the map that Ancestry shows for the large-scale groups does show them overlapping and going beyond the area you might associate with the label, and in some cases they've changed the labels: what was once labelled just "Ireland" is now "Ireland, Scotland, Wales". I think the smaller-scale more recent groups are more accurate: they put me in "Southern England" which is spot on, and my s-i-l in "French Canada", which is correct, and "Galway" which is interesting as their family history in Ireland that is traceable (thanks, IRA, for burning down the archives in 1922) is firmly counties Tyrone and Cork.

The DNA sites would probably have a meltdown if they tested me, either that or plod would be knocking on the door. I wonder where they have us 'lukky heather' mongrels as originating?

There are an assortment of UK Romany projects on the go. One with Leicester Uni I think, if it is still running. I thought it was considered that Romany people originated from NW Asia. Not Eygpt as was previously thought. There is a Romany and Traveller FHS.

The tree I am currently working on may well have Romany within it on the paternal 2xgrt grandparent side. The surname is a good match as well as the occupation etc.
