The American Way of Doing Things - Lawnmowers

Re: The American Way of Doing Things - Lawnmowers
We're not all that far from you, Chawkins, here in MS. Our grass, like yours, is brown in winter and lush and green in spring, summer and most of fall. Wish we had bought a Deere instead hubby chose a Troy Built ride on and is a piece of crap. In for repair for the second time in 3 months. No way would our thick grass deal well with an electric mower. Have a difficult time with the weed wacker which is electric.

Just googled "zero turn mower". I didn't realize I *need* this in my life.

For some reason, my Multi-quote function doesn't work. I just spent 20 minutes trying to multi-quote several posts that mention how much the posters adore their leaf blowers.
Anyway, you know who you are, leaf blower lovers, and I have to sadly shake my head at the fact that you all have gone over to the dark side. (Interestingly, most seem to be men, if one can be sure of such a thing on a forum like this...)

It's the "upgrade". If you are using any browser other than Edge, put it in the site issue forum on the software update thread. They already know that this happens in Edge.

You could, if you're so inclined. If I had a 1 acre lot though, I'd be on one of those like flies on shit. It would make mowing the lawn actually something to look forward to, rather than just something to get out of the way.

Using a zero turn is so much fun you may do that. Look at the Hustler or Gravely brands. Mine is a Hustler which is a little cheaper but excellent quality. I went with the smaller 38 inch deck for maneuvering and it only has two blades which is easier to maintain. You will be surprised how fast you can cut your grass.

Saw an advert in the local paper today, they have lawnmower which works the same way as those "Roomba" type vacuum cleaners which trundle around your house picking up your messes.
This one plugs into a charging dock, is activated by an app on your smart phone and returns to its charging base when the job is done.

I think the robotic mower predates the robotic vacuum cleaner by quite a few years, the app thing might be new but they were advertising those things at my local outdoor tools outlet when I lived in Exeter - which was a few years before the millenium - this one was solar powered and being demo'd on the grassy median in the middle of Western Way.

I bought a Honda gas mower 16 years ago and it still starts first pull. No hassle?

I don't either. Leaf blowers are spawn of the devil and American lawn/landscape services are addicted to the bloody things!!!
I don't mind the sound of a gas-powered mower--that's a moderate level of noise that's actually doing something useful. Leaf blowers simply blow leaves & other debris either 1.) into the street, or 2.) into a neighboring property. Just another example of Americans wanting their properties to look like a magazine spread instead of a real garden & throwing money at idiotic machines in the effort.

In newer construction gas is what is installed in new homes here in PG&E territory, but in my house & a rental the kitchens are all electric, even took the gas out of the kitchens, Gas cooktops/hobs, & ranges/cookers are filthy, my kitchen was last painted in 1994 & the paint is still in fairly good shape. Tenants cannot be relied on to use the hood to exhaust the cooking odors & such

The first recorded example of people using air pressure to remove leaves comes from Japan in the 19th century, when gardeners used bellows to clean up mossy ground. It has been claimed by others and widely circulated around the internet that the Japanese then were the first to have the idea of adding a hose and motor, around 1970, and then sold the machines into the USA.
If they did, they were by then copying developments that had already taken place in the USA and Europe.

However they began, they are now the worst kind of blight. More and more communities are banning (or deeply restricting) their use....
In 2011, Edmunds, the car reviewer, compared a two-stroke-engine leaf blower with a Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck, finding that a half-hour of yardwork produced the same amount of hydrocarbon emissions as a 3,887-mile drive in the truck. In other words: Blow leaves from your lawn, or drive from Maplewood to Juneau, Alaska. Your choice.
