At the risk of heading back on-topic, I thought I had enough problems with spelling my surname in the UK; here it's even worse:
Me: A as in apple
Other: Eye
Me: No, A as in apple
Other: I as in Apple? What?
I cannot say AYE any other way - and I don't mean a farmer/northern AYE but an AI-EE!

Going back to the OP, a local radio station is called Route 106 and the jingles pronounce it "root". But the DJs announce it as "rowte". Can't they be consistent?!

Found an interesting site (looking for something else of course), "Do You Speak American?"
Route - ROOT or ROWT?

ROOT has been preferred or listed first in dictionaries since the mid-19th century. ROWT, however, has as long a history as ROOT, and was preferred by many of the earliest authorities. In the first half of the 20th century ROWT was often labeled colloquial, provincial, or military; it is now well established in various engineering, transportation, delivery, and sales contexts.

Yeah, why is that? What's next, a sunroof means you can call it a cabriolet?

Ironically, that's always written as 'bleu cheese' when I see it on menus here
