Default 3 California's?

Those from California know that you can more or less get anything onto the ballot with sufficient funds and signatures so this sort of thing isn't all that surprising that it's on the ballot.

If it did somehow pass, would the feds be able to stop it? Courts? What is the precedent for states splitting from one into several?

Proposal to split California into 3 states will be on November ballot | abc7.com

Well, it'll mess up the flag. How would you arrange 52 stars?
Currently 5 rows of 6, interspersed with 4 rows of 5.

It's impossible. It can't be done - there's nothing aesthetically possible.

Splitting up California has been proposed since California has founded. Pavement did a song about it 25 years ago.

4 rows of 7 with 4 rows of 6:

Or slightly more pleasing is 4 rows of 7 with 3 rows of 8:

Or we could just get Texas to secede and give Alaska back to Russia and we're still at 50

Danggittt. We cannot split our flag because it'll bugger up the flag. Sod any benefits to the state(3s), can't do it cos of the flag.

I suppose I get San Diego instead of LA or SF. Better I think? Confused dot com.

Right now 40m Californians have the same representation in the Senate as several states with populations of 2m of less. Of course, it was the intent of the founding fathers to prevent small states being outvoted by large, but I doubt they envisaged such a lop-sided population shift.

I don't think anyone could have predicted the gold rush or the great westward expansion of the railroads in 1776.

The issue imho is not the number of representatives but the current 'donkeys' that are those representatives!

Perhaps it would make more sense to combine a few of the 'lesser' states, like North and South Dakota, Wyoming, etc ... populations:
Wyoming: 579,000
Vermont: 623,000
North Dakota: 755,000
South Dakota: 869,000
Delaware: 961,000
(Source: https://www.google.com/publicdata/ex...l=en&ind=false )
California has 39.5 MILLION ...

The population of the 20 smallest states combined is less than the population of California. Those states have 40% of the Senate's representation versus California's 2%.

AIUI it’s not expected to pass the ballot and it would then have to be ratified by the state assembly and agreed to by Congress. That’s unlikely due to two of the new states likely being solid Democrat and the third likely being a swing state so the GOP is unlikely to agree a net gain of 2-4 Dem senators.

The precedent of states spliting with their and Congressional consent is well established though. KY (from VA), TN (from NC) and ME (from MA) all split, and of course so did WV from VA during the Civil War. That one’s a bit dodgy as the pro-Union counties of VA organised a pro-Union “government” of VA which promptly ratified those same counties’ secession from the state. But the Union won so suck on it rebels!

And thank goodness for that! The US would cease to exist if the nutcases from Berkeley and San Francisco had their way.
