Well it's a billion dollar industry based around trying to make ads that are deep and meaningful so it's not that unexpected.

Which seems to be quite a British thing to do - the old coffee Ad's were practically a National TV Soap. They only seem to do it here for Superbowl, then again, they only seem to advertise drugs and Pillow's.

The only suitable Christmas gifts I know of, according to tv ads, are cars and jewellery. Anything less than that is not a good gift.

Nah it's quite common in both markets. The Superbowl and the Xmas ad are just the highest profile slots on each side of the Atlantic. It has gotten more common over the last 10 years. In the UK in particular advertisers seem to have forgotten that humour can be meaningfully emotional too. You don't always have to try and make people cry.
