I hate to be morbid, but IF this wonderful lady were to pop her clogs before January 2021, could Trump somehow appoint a new member? I seem to recall a similar situation near the end of Obama's term and he did not appoint a new justice, but - I can imagine Trump being less honorable ...

It's not up to Trump, he can nominate someone but that's it. it's McConnell. You can guarantee that they would replace RBG if she were to pass away, even in the lame duck session between the election and the swearing in of the new Senate.

Let's hope she can hang on until January 3rd if we get a Dem Senate, and January 20th if not.

The consequences of another staunch conservative being placed on SCOTUS by Trump/McConnell are grave. A 6-3 majority would last for probably 30 years.

Surly he must realize what a s*itstorn this is going to kick up.

The 'Law and Order President' just called to abandon the law.

He (or his advisers) know exactly how much of a storm it'll kick up.

They're trying to draw attention away from the awful GDP numbers released this morning.

And will be successful. Of that I have no doubt.

I don't know, I don't see that these GDP numbers were anything but expected. It's hardly a newsflash that the economy has taken a kicking since March.

I don't blame Trump for that personally. I do blame him for not taking it further in preventing over 150,000 deaths.

The distraction, is thinking it is a distravtion, rather than an actual tactic, that we have seen coming for quite some time. The distraction is in " it couldn't happen here" thinking.

It can't happen here. At least not without consent from Democrats.

It cannot be done by Executive Order, and the date is set down in Federal Statue. It would require an Act of Congress to change it.

Do you think Pelosi is going to bring that to the floor for a vote?

I'm sure you're going to throw 'Martial Law' back at me, but that would be challenged immediately. The US held an election during a Civil War, this President isn't going to stop it.

Basing a defence against this solely in appeals to the Constitution are meaningless, naive, and ignorant, but above all dangerous.

Before you call other people naive and ignorant for explaining why he's not able to change the date of the election perhaps you'd like to explain your theory of how he could?

The Constitution is the only document standing between this country and the Third Reich. Setting it aside is dangerous.

He can't, legally. The Insurrection Act is the cudgel that would be used.

Did I say anyone was? Putting words in my mouth does not make for a good debate. It also constitutes 'making things up'

I stated that setting aside the Constitution is dangerous. In any situation. Period.

You're also yet to provide any explanation for your initial thesis.
