The sad thing is, I am so averse to the UK version of gravy, that I have to get past the spaghetti sauce -- or any other kind of sauce -- being referred to by that name! I am familiar with the kind that you are referring to and it's not something I would choose to eat.

I have never heard spaghetti sauce referred to as gravy

There's definitely a scene in Goodfellas where Henry Hill says he has to make the gravy, and I think the term is possibly used somewhere in one of the Godfather movies.

Been a while since I watched either, I obviously wasn't paying very close attention :D

Google notes:

The Eternal Italian American Debate: 'Gravy' or 'Sauce' In the first chapter of her excellent and enjoyable book “Gravy Wars,” Lorraine Ranalli states that the term gravy is “unique” to South Philly Italians. By “gravy” she means what most people call “sauce” — that tomato-ey stuff that goes on pasta.

That is b.s. about it being unique to South Philly. Here is more on the topic:

Gravy is a loosely defined term in the US. In this case, it's more of a roux (I think the term is), kind of a flour-based white sauce with sausages in it.

If it's made Southern-style it's more lard based than flour based. If it's made well, then it's good. If not it can be rank.

Lard would certainly be better.

Most of my European pals have no understanding of the word gravy, only sauce.

To my mind Gravy is normally based on a beef stock flavour or can be occasionally based on other meats.

With no meaty content or flavour, it is then a sauce.

Yes, that's pretty much the way I think about it. With exception of peppercorn sauce, which is essentially gravy, but most definitely referred to as sauce.

Kasich was on TV the other day talking about how the people of Cleveland could express their anger about the killing of the black fellow by police, without burning the city down. They do it differently in Canada:

I'm looking forward to a Presidential debate between Trump and Hilary if it ever happens. I predict that Trump will just end up as the chump.

Yes he's good on rhetoric. Going to straighten out China on the 500 billion trade imbalance. Building a 2000 mile wall along the border and getting Mexico to pay for it. Forcibly deporting eleven million illegals and "waterboarding and more" suspected terrorists when it's against international law.

What we'd like to know is exactly how he's going to accomplish all that. This is where Trump is going to fall flat on his face. I can hardly wait.

This election process so far has been shabby to say the least. All Trump has done is insult people all over the place and the rest of the Republican candidates just bad mouthing each other without hardly a mention of how to deal with the real problems this country has to fix

Terrifying thought for the day:

Donald Trump is heralding an era of loudmouth billionaire presidential candidates who fancy having a go at running the country.

Who can we expect to see self-financing in 2020? Mark Cuban? Carl Icahn? Larry Ellison? Jeff Bezos?
