Re: The Land of Smiles ?
Having lived in Thailand and heard umpteen stories, this is sadly typical of what happens "sometimes" when Thais have had one too many to drink. They turn.
And, like every country in the world, there are the good guys and the bad guys. Unfortunately this couple met the bad guys.
Every evening while having my dinner, I skim through the Daily Express app (UK) and, frankly, I see a lot worse than this every day. Just saying like....

I hoped to get reactions from people who know the country better than I do. I spent a vacation there once, when I was working in the Middle East. I could not figure the place out at all. It seemed deeply alien to me - much more alien than the Arab countries.

Lots of good things about Thailand. I spent 4 years in BKK for working and never had a problem. I enjoyed my time there alot. However, there are stories like the above that come up. Like many Asians (myself included ), many Thai people cannot drink alcohol, and when they do, they get drunk very quickly. Somewhat off topic, but many Asians lack something to help metabolize alcohol in the body.
I think there is also somewhat of a "macho" culture in Thailand, so put young men together + alcohol = bad things happening.

Do we have a Stirring-The-Pot smilie?
It's true though. I remember watching a programme years ago, Prof Robert Winston (you remember him?) and there is apparently a gene in some Asians. You may have noticed in Penang that you don't see too many Chinese drinkers.

Loads of bad things happen in Thailand all the time. This got publicity because there were Brits involved.
There was a far worse IMO case recently where a disabled guy was beaten to death by the sons of some police.http://m.bangkokpost.com/news/956881
I can also remember a man beating his wife to death when she took the remote and changed channel during the 2002 world cup.
My point is that there is nothing new in violence, only what makes the news.
Having said that, caution should be exercised when drinking near large groups of Thais also drinking.
