Of course I'm not bumping this thread. Would i do that? hehe

Pretty stormy weather there at the moment. Phuket does get the southwest monsoon big time. Anyone there at the moment? Lots of powercuts huh?

Any suggestions for places of cultural significance easily accessible with young children looking to immerse themselves.
try the stretch of coastline around Krabbi , I don't know about cultural significance . . I don't think that works with young children . Not mine anyway !
But Krabbi is IMO very good for a nice relaxed family holiday . Air ASia flies there so it's easy to get to too.

I'm currently in Kata with my son (11), it's ok, anyone got any ideas for cheap trips (we're on a 1200bht/day budget & hotel is paid)?

Local bus from Karon to Phuket Town at every 1 hour (25Baht one way, I think).

You can jump in between them. Good luck.

I think there's also a bus goes to Rawai if you are feeling adventurous. Nice promenade walk and can walk up the pier. Not as touristy as Kata/Karon, nice seafood eateries, Nikitas eatery on seafront is a nice spot

Thanks guys, heading to Rawai on Saturday. Not sure I fancy Phuket town, too commercialised and too many girls bars maybe?

Phuket Town is actually quite low key and not a lot to do there.

Enjoy Rawai. I know you have 11 year old in tow, but Nikitas on waterfront very family friendly. Might seem odd choice but take him to Sunshine Bar for some cabaret. It's good fun place and they do all the Thai singing n dancing. They will probably make a big fuss of him :-) Nice folks in there. Have fun.

We tend to go further south than Patong, and enjoy the Kata area.

Last February was a good short holiday there.
We would be inclined to go to the same place again, as we don't know many places in Thailand which has the super beaches that we like/.

Yes for beaches it's great. Kata beach and Kata Noi are both nice, aren't they? Have you been to Nai Harn beach?

No TV, no driving rules, and a population who drink too much and then chase me with cleavers.

After that Phuket doesn't look so bad
Note to self, swim in the hotel pool and eat in

Nice enough beaches but keeping in mind the rather high fatality rate..drownings. Especially during the monsoon season.

Yes though tourists seem to leave their brains behind sometimes and go swimming when there are red flags up. They don't realize how dangerous it is.

At Nai Harn, it's actually only one end of the beach that gets the difficult undercurrents. The beach end nearest to the hotel, I was told, is pretty safe from undercurrents. As you say Troubadour, this only happens during the summer months at SW monsoon time. In the winter months, when the wind direction is t'other way, the sea is as flat as a pancake.

Hi Cheyne,

Yes very glad to be in Penang. But... as always.... it's horses for courses.

No don't miss the beaches. To be honest, I am not a beach person. I'd rather go for a walk. In fact, if I go to a beach, I'll walk along it

There are some half decent beaches in Penang but, if you are a beach lover and want to lay there all day everyday and swim in the sea, you may be better off in Phuket.
