What would you go for?

Hello everyone, I am hoping that some of you could give me a bit of advice. Me and my fiance are determined to move to oz but I am a bit unsure of the best option for me. I am a primary school teacher. Here are the options that I have found so far:

1. PR (we have enough points but the cost of the visa is high and I do not know how hard it will be to find a job out there)

2. Sponsored by my sister. My sister and her husband live in melbourne and would sponsor us. (same thing about getting a job applies)

3. WA sponsorship scheme (job on arrival and help with housing, but no real control over where we would end up, but we do not want to live in a city and would be ok anywhere rural)

4. Do victoria do a similar sponsorship scheme? (we would be a hell of a lot nearer to my sister!)

We have visited oz a few times, we like the NSW and QLD border but the more i here about WA, the more I like the sound of it. Victoria is an option too.

What would you do? and have any of you had the same dilemma? We want to leave in 2010

Any help would be really good, Thanks,

Tom and Jo

Wouldn't be so sure you'd be ok to live anywhere rural?
Sounds like you're wanting to live near your sister, so not sure why you'd want to live as far away in Aus as possible?
Would your sister be willing to accomodate you on arrival until you're sorted with rental. Once orientation course is complete dependent on where you live there will be supply work. Does sound to me like as in UK supply is the way to show what you can do and hopefully a full time post comes up at a schoolwhere you've worked.

WA isn't for everyone, plenty of BE complain about it. We loved top end of NSW, but not an option for us at this moment in time. Never been to WA and not 100% sure if we'll settle there for good, but very willing to give it a go. But got no close family ties in Aus at the moment.

Best of luck and I hope you can find the answers you're looking for, others can make comments but at the end of the day it's their slant on how things are/will be, only you can make important decisions for yourself.

Hello,
Victoria do a sponsorship but no job or housing provided. You have to find it yourself on arrival. Thats one of the reasons we went for WA.

However if you want nearer your family, you may be best going for Victoria.

WA scheme worked great for us, as we had kids and ended up with job and housing on arrival. So less stress and easy way.

However I have seen one guy who really wanted another state and so was never really happy from day one, as all he could think about was the state he really wanted. Id really ensure you want WA before you make the leap.

Cost of PR or sponsorship by your sister will be the same, only thing is you need less points for your sister to sponser.

WA is lovely place, but you need to work out what you really want. Are you happy being independant of family and warmer climate of WA? Or is your heart really wanting to be in Victoria with your family?

If you have the necessary points for a skilled indepentent visa definitely go for that. You will have no restrictions on where you live or what you do.

Re: What would you go for?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. We are not desperate to be near my sister (sounds terrible doesn't it?!!) and Jo is not even that keen on Victoria because she wants to be somewhere a little warmer, say south QLD or WA. I see the WA sponsorship way in as a good test really. The teaching would be challenging, the remoteness would also. But that kinda makes it more interesting! It would just make the initial 2 years a bit cheaper i guess, with less chance to eat into our savings before we decided where we would like to settle. If we went and then applied for our PR after say a year (we have enough points) can we do this from australia? Is it a case of flying out to NZ and then flying in again to make it official at some point?
thanks,

Tom and Jo

Re: What would you go for?

If you come over on a temp visa and do your own PR in Australia you have to fly out, so NZ would work or Singapore etc. Then fly back a few days later and this validates your permanent visa.

With the sponsored PR visa from employer, you dont need to leave the country to validate the visa or need loads of points.
