Tips for job hunting (teaching)
 

Wondered if people had any tips that you wanted to share that have helped you in your job search.

I've looked at a couple of sites such as seek.com that list jobs but wondered if there are any recommended agencies people used to find teaching jobs.

In the UK we can apply to specific education departments for jobs and wondered if there is an equivalent in South Australia?

Don't really know what you mean by 'specific education departments' in the UK, I've always just applied directly to schools, but in SA there is the department of education which advertises all jobs:

Apparently for supply teaching (called relief teaching in Australia) it is best to go into each individual school with your CV and contact details.

Tradewind is a very good agency (with offices in both UK and Australia), not sure if they have jobs in Adelaide.

Sorry I meant that in the UK education departments have lists of schools that are advertising jobs and then yes you do apply directly to the school.

Hi, my friend is a science teacher, and she used 'Smart Teachers' agency, and they found her a great deal of job opportunities - including remote areas and in the city. They found her a great job, just what she was looking for, she would recommend smart teachers agency!

Smart Teachers are big in Oz - they handle a large number of teaching jobs for the private sector in WA, especially Catholic Ed. They don't seem to have an office in SA though, but it might be worth contacting one of their other Australian offices.

I would suggest Compass International Teacher Recruitment - compassteaching.com. They mainly deal with international schools.

Contacting agencies are the good way to search for teaching jobs, as the job portals don't give appropriate information about this. I've also heard about the smart teachers agency a lot. Many of my friends also got relevant schools information from there. But while selecting a school for interview you should be very cautious, otherwise your time and money would be wasted. Your qualifications should match with that of the schools requirement and the school should match your needs like timings, money and growth. Teaching profession is a stable one, choose a good school, because you can spend your entire career there.

I don't think agencies are a huge thing here in Australia, better contacting the schools directly, then you're a face to a name, rather than a piece of anonymous paper...

In fact I found it to be exactly the same in the UK. Schools are not keen on anonymous staff, and who can blame them! lol

So did you just go into schools and give them your CV instead of going through an agent? Is that definitely the norm over there?

Can you recommend any good agents.

I've looked at seek.com and teachers.on.net job sites, any others that are recommended?

Well, each country has their own rules for recruiting teachers, but it is always good looking on internet agencies, like this one in States www.teacherjobs.com
where my friend found a job few months ago !
