Thanks! I will do. Have been invited to the london expo as a primary school teacher, which is interesting. Wondering who wanted me, think it is WA.

Phew! That's a lot of information! Thank you so much for returning to fill us all in!!!!!!
I'm worried about the transcript thing as the university where I did my degree 18 years ago cannot provide me with a breakdown of my marks, only basically a letter that says I attended and got the degree I say I got. They aren't able to offer anything more and indeed never issued a transcript when I graduated either.
Also, I've ordered and received my transcript from my PGCE and it also doesn't break down anything with marks or time spent on teaching practice.
Looks like I won't be teaching in Oz after all......

I am a secondary school teacher and just about to apply for the 175 visa for Oz. My question is about the job description and how much detail you need to put down here? Any help much appreciated.

After having posted on this thread back in March 2007, we finally got around to submitting our visa application in March 2008 and received our visa the day before yesterday! Woohoo!
I'm about to get my VIT registration process started but am trying to explain to my wife that I need to get to Australia before looking seriously for a job. I think one of us needs not to be working at the beginning to deal with the bureacracy and settling the boys in school. I'm hoping that the boys' school will let me in to help in class so I can get a feel for the system, then I'll try and get some supply with the aim of trying to get a 'proper' job for the 2010 academic year - if such a thing exists. Victoria does seem to advertise a lot of jobs and I'm hoping that some of them constitute real vacancies that I can apply for.
Does anyone know how male infant teachers are viewed in Australia? I've not managed to find out if the government is as keen to get men into younger classes as they seem to be in the UK. I was hoping it would be a selling point on my behalf!

My concern is after 20 years of teaching do I really have to get references/ testaments from all those schools or will my current line manager/head of service reference be enough accompanied by LEA letters of employment completed. Many of the heads I orked for have retitred one has past away. Help ,anyone?

Regarding references, if you've been in your current school a long time I'd just get a ref from there. If you move fairly often you might need more refs.

Hi Hereshopping
Thanks for the prompt reply. I hope you wont mind if I pick your brains over this. We had to move mountains to get my husband through the skilled visa process. I think I will struggle to get transcripts of degree/ teaching qualifications etc from 20 years ago but will have a go. Certainly re-assuring to hear reference from current post will probably do. Also I am a specialist teacher for the deaf now, have you any advice/information about how or if Victoria (and especially Melbourne) has support services for its sensory specialists and how to contact them for general info?

Hi Halshaw
When we started the visa process, I was worried about getting transcripts from 20 years ago too. After a couple of phonecalls to University Registrars, they couldn't have been more helpful. My BA university even provided a transcript with all my end of year exam marks on (thank god they weren't too bad). Although my PGCE university couldn't give me a detailed transcript of my actual course, they did provide me with a simple transcript and then an authorised course outline with the university stamp on each page. My MA one (more recent) was much easier.
To be fair, I haven't sent everything off to the Victoria Institute of Teachers yet for my registration but I'm not expecting any problems.
It's worth a phonecall or letter to the Registrar of your university. They'll probably be very helpful. Good luck.

As for degree transcripts, most unis are very helpful. If they can't provide a transcript then a formal letter saying that this is the case will normally suffice.

Hi Hereshoping, thanks for the reply wasnt expecting too much as its a very small part of the ed system world wide- think I'll have to cast my net further teacher wise anyway but cheers appreciate the grey cell work. How you coping with the heat? my brother has got a 4 month old baby down there must phone him, news here is all about the fires and the transport system breaking down. Blighty is cold and grim with snow expected by monday - would settle just for more day light at the mo!

I'm 41 and too old to get my own visa. I sent my six-years-younger nurse wife off to do the IELTS and get us our visa with 125 points.
I have held off my registration application (as I wasn't needed for the visa I didn't go through skills assessment) until the visa actually arrived but need to get around to it pretty soon as we're due to go in August.
Palaver is right! And you forgot to mention the waiting!
Good luck!
