Realistic plans? Or cloud cockoo land?!

I am a 26 year old primary school teacher with 3 years post-qualification experience. Studied a degree in Economics then completed a primary PGCE. I'm looking at the possibility of spending a year in Australia (from Jan/Feb/March '10), working for a while then heading off to do some travelling/have a holiday. I was thinking of a working holiday visa (for simplicity and cost) and doing supply teaching. I've read lots of posts re: getting qualification recognised and realise this won't be quick and easy!
...also will be with my girlfriend who could be on a working-holiday visa too looking for temping work in the accountancy field. She has CIPFA qualification (which also means is eligible to become a CPA australia member) and would be a after public sector work.

Sorry for the long essay - are there big holes in my plan? Thanks for any help/advice.

it wont be easy, (is anything really worth doing if its a doddle?) but its do-able. start emailing the various states teaching authorities and see how the the could accomadate you. my experience is with W.A. and i think you could teach on supply there, cant comment on others.

go for it mate, even if you end up doing other types of work its a year you will never forget.

Cheers Derek, I appreciate the positive attitude :D

With my girlfriend looking for work in finance I was thinking that a major city would be best for her (though I hear this is also where lots of teachers want jobs!). Melbourne would be top of the list but quite flexible between them. Some more posts telling me this could happen please...or telling me I'm off my rocker?!

Have a look at this site provided by the NSW DET.

NSW DET

They have a programme for people on WHVs looking for casual teaching. There are also more accountancy jobs in Sydney than you could shake a stick at, so your girlfriend really won't struggle to find work either.

Hope that helps,

S

Thanks, I hadn't found too much about teaching on a WHV - that certainly sounded v. good. Thanks again.

A lot of your agencies that are alive and kicking in the UK (Timeplan, Select, Global, Smart, A Star, Bluewave) also recruit teachers for Oz. Not that you need a recruiter but they might be useful in terms of research and getting advice on best place to go and ins and outs of schooling in Oz.

As you will have discovered in searching these forums, registration for teaching is only valid state by state so you need to know where you are headed and apply for rego there.
