Default Psychology in USA

HI, I am going to be moving to USA very soon and am trying to figure out what sort of employment opportunities will be best to go for! I have a degree and Masters in Psychology and also a PGCE in Early Years Education. I have some primary teaching experiece but my focus has mostly been in Psychology. I currently work as a Teaching Assistant at University of Manchester and do some lecturing there in the Psychology department. I also do some Research Assistant work. I have just finished a job as a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant for the NHS. I have a lot of experience carrying out research in schools and loads of experience with children. I really want to stay in the Psychology field but realise Psychology is viewed differently in the States and wonde what sort of career options I have.
Many thanks
Rachael

Hi there,
I just spent the last 6 years as a Behaviour Specialist (only Bachelor's level) in the US, working with folks with developmental disabilities. Further up the chain at Master's level were the clinical psychologists, therapists and program directors. There seem to be a lot of opportunities in the Human Services field for people with Psychology degrees.

I guess other opportunities would be in the therapeutic field - the US is full of therapists. A couple of people I worked with also had a background of S&LT. As for teaching with a PGCE - I also have a PGCE - the whole credential recognition is completely different, and it really varies from state to state. I knew someone with a Psychology background who taught Educational Psychology at a local university.

Hope this helps a bit. Btw - I lived in Pennsylvania.

Thanks

Thanks for your email, really helpful and interesting. I am pretty open to what I do, but would like to stay within the psychology realm. I am doing quite a lot of research and SPSS stuff as well as lecturing at the moment, and am always on the edge of starting my PhD. I don't know if to apply for research methods type stuff or to go more academic or first hand experience. I am moving to the NYC region but have a 5 year old daughter so have to think about hours etc too.
I have a lot of experience with children but not too much one to one with adults. I am unsure what jobs I should aim for, decent wage but not unrealistic.
thanks
