Default prep teachers

Hi,
i've asked this before but no one seemed to know so i'm trying again!

I have a BA Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies. I've been working as a Senior Practitioner, teaching a Foundation 2 (reception class) for the last 3 yrs in the UK.

Does anyone know if a prep teacher in Qld has to have the final 1/2 yrs of teacher training on top of their degree before they can teach??

I know that a primary teacher needs to have QTS but i've just read mixed things about the prep year!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sam

No idea... but have you looked at the teaching skills assessment site?

http://www.teachingaustralia.edu.au/ta/go/home/pid/418

They can tell you if your qualifications will be recognised in Au.

You will need to have a look at the Queensland College of Teachers who will register you as a teacher or contact them directly: http://www.qct.edu.au/

As Prep classes are incorporated into the main school you do need to have the full teaching qualifications you would need for any primary/secondary teaching job - the minimum (I think in nearly every state/territory) in Australia is 4 years of training, either a 4 year undergrad teaching degree or 3 years and the postgrad year. Another thing: the teachers I have spoken to who are working in the prep year at the moment, it seems they are pushing for these teachers to have further quals in Early Childhood (or to have their original teaching degree specialise in this area). If anything they want more quals from people to teach Prep than for general primary!

QTS doesn't count in Australia although if you have under a year or 2 of experience you will receive provisional registration until you can show you have gained enough experience to be fully registered (this is Qld and NT not sure about other states)

You may be getting confused over preschool and prep? Preschool education or childcare, which is outside the mainstream primary school does not necessarily require full teaching qualifications.

This is from a Qld perspective - there are differences between the states/territories with regards to the initial year of schooling.
