Default Brexit Decimates ESL Schools in Europe

With native speakers from the UK now banned from working in Europe, what has happened to the multitudes of English language schools there. I heard that in Italy and Spain many have had to close. What has happened to the 1000s of ESL teachers who used to work in Spain , Iraly etc? is there any hope that some agreement will be reached with the UK government ,so to speak, and the Europeans to allow teachers to work again?

Why are native English speakers banned from working in Europe? Surely if they have the legal right to live in a European country then they can still work there? I'm in Spain at the moment and was talking to a young lady in a bar last night who has just started a job in a local school here having moved over from London a few days ago. Is this a new law?

They are banned because they are no longer EU citizens so dont have the right to work in the EU.

They don't any longer have the automatic right to work in the EU.

However, those who were already in the EU pre-Brexit retain their rights in their country of residence and those who were not, or who wish to work elsewhere than in the country in which they resided pre-Brexit, could obtain a visa to work in any EU country, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Some countries (Portugal, for example) also give the right to work to all foreign residents, regardless of which type of visa they requested as their path to residency.

Thanks for clarifying it!

Did you read Red Eric's post above & the link posted by SoS??
It is possible for UK citizens to work in Europe, they need to meet the criteria, same as for any other country in the world.

It's certainly made things more difficult for anyone wanting a smooth and relatively hassle-free transfer of residence.

Specifically with regard to the effect on the supply of EFL teachers to language schools in Europe, I wouldn't have thought it's had a massive impact. I don't suppose being a native speaker is an essential requirement for the job and there are lots of qualified teachers and lots of fluent English speakers everywhere. In fact a quick bit of totally unscientific internet querying seems to indicate a larger impact on schools based in the UK than on this side of the moat.

Yes, I can see that now

I'm not sure all the language schools would necessarily agree, though. And if they did, they could still hire Irish nationals without any bother.

Not all Irish citizens have a strong Irish accent, assuming its that to which you are referring in your first point! In fact many don't have an Irish accent at all.
I also know a couple of Australians who teach ESL, both have European passports and could work with no issues, and they are considering it as part of a gap year.

According to your thread title, it's loused it up for ESL schools in Europe, which is the point I'm contending.

I haven't seen any evidence of that.
