Default Becomming a teacher in Melbourne

Hi everyone
I would be very grateful for some advice
We are hopefully moving to Melbourne in the next few months.
I am currently a stay at home mom with a 16 month old and hopefully will have another bub or two in the next few years. Pre children I had a hectic corporate job and would love to move into teaching once last baby reaches school.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree specialising in English and Economics, as well as an MBA. However I would love to teach Math so am considering doing a few Math courses via distance learning, before I do my one year teaching qualification. My understanding is that I need to show Math courses up to a second year level to be allowed to teach Math? Is it ok if these courses were not taken as part of my original degrees? My BA degree had only first year Math but as that was a while ago I would redo that as well as second year.
I was thinking of doing these courses through the University of South Africa, who will let you do courses "for non degree purposes" - very affordable. Would this be accepted or would it be better to do it through an Ozzie uni such as Open university?

Some other more random questions:
Do you think there will still be shortage of Math teachers in 5-7 years time? Should I rather stick with English/Economics/Business studies?
Also do private school teachers get discounts on school fees for their kids?
Thanks so much for your time!
Lyn

I would definitely stick with teaching Maths instead of English/Business. There is always a shortage of good Maths/Science Teachers so it should be a safer choice.

Yes, usually private schools offer reduced fees if you work there, but unfortunately teaching jobs in good private schools can be hard to get and very competitive.

Good luck

Also heard that the 'top' schools expect a great deal of commitment here in SA.

There's a HUGE oversupply of teachers in OZ...with the exception of working in the rural/outback sector or Maths teaching. So as long as you stick to Maths, you'll be fine.

Add science - certainly physics.
