That aside, remember, NI wanted to remain in the EU, and Ireland of today certainly isn't the same one of 1970.

Think about it. It would be relatively easy. A referendum, if won, following a fight with England about it... Ultimately reunifies, instantly remains in the EU (no need to reapply for EU membership) and instantly solves the border issue, leaving England to realise the isolation it so badly wants.

Relatively easy. Scotland, on the other hand, would have a much bigger hill to climb. Must reapply for EU membership, and there's that nasty border issue again. But if England continues to screw this up, even Scotland might be motivated to go, despite the mess it would cause. Especially if NI did.
How would the majority Protestant Northern Irish feel about re-unification with the Irish republic. I've heard that Belfast is still a religiously segregated city despite the troubles being over. Absorbing N.I into the Irish Republic might be vaguely similar to the re-unification of West and East Germany. While North Ireland is not economically or industrially backward as East Germany was there could be a different problem with a very sizeable addition to the population who still dislike the Catholic church and retain some feeling of loyalty to the UK. Would the Irish Republic see that as one reason to discourage unification? Are the Protestant Northern Irish different in their sentiments today than they were in the 1970s?

If Scotland were to leave the UK and apply for EU membership I would think that the majority in Northern Ireland might just go for a unification with Scotland instead. if religion is still of any importance

No but didn't you read - he heard that Belfast is still a segregated city. That's like way more knowledgeable that say, I don't know, going there or something like that. Wrap it up now, the debate's over.

Okay so it's all love and peace. . Shit can images of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, trash the photos of the Queen and the mini Union Jacks, no more Orange parades. I'm impressed with the astounding progress.

Ireland (nor NI) is no longer an impoverished country. It's "first world". It "doesn't suck". It's an EU member state (what NI wanted).

First world inhabitants today are more interested in their futures than their religion. They're faced with first world problems, like buying a home, that new BMW, sending the kids to uni... Brexit will make that more difficult, particularly for inhabitants of the UK.

But what if they could still "remain", despite Brexit?

So England has now become the nation of backward numpties, bent on going it alone in a world that has become a massive global trading village while Ireland, once the impoverished priest ridden appendix to the UK is now first world. Well stranger things have happened in history.

I asked my mate in Larne (Protestant, Orange Order member and very keen on posting sectarian bullshit across social media) whether he would still be happy if his Leave vote in the Brexit referendum ends up with NI uniting with the Republic of Ireland.

His answer was "We'll make sure there won't be a ****ing republic if that happens."

He won't have to worry, not even the Republic would want to keep Larne.

I know full well that the Republic of Ireland is now a prosperous, progressive first world Euro nation. I don't see why it would particularly want re-unification with the north. The northern Irish throughout history have always wanted to remain part of the UK. So really why would anyone give a **** for N.I and what advantage would NI be to the Irish Republic ?. Let it sink or swim with the rest of the UK

Why would it not? It belongs to them. Always has. Also would solve the border issue and allow England to run off in isolationist glory. What's not to like?

Never been. Is it that bad then?

I visited a few places in NI - Belfast, Derry, Armagh as well as the obligatory trip to Giant's Causeway (and a stop off for a couple of pints in Joey's Bar in Ballymoney). All pleasant enough. This was after The Troubles of course.

It's a bloody strange place though. I've got another mate (Protestant) that lives in Kilkeel, and even though it's quite close to the border, she's never visited the ROI. Not once.
