It cost me over $40.00 to fill the car for the second time in a row. I know those in Europe spend way more on petrol but it wasn't that long ago when we were being spoiled with petrol at $1.50/gal so I've a good reason to be mildly pissed off

The thing is, a lot of the price in Britain is tax so at least it's going towards some sort of good. Here it's just lining the capacious pockets of the oil companies.

Now there's a point. Why is it OK that we get f**ked by them every time we fill up but you can't talk about using tax to fund things for the public good? No, that makes you a communist doesn't it

U.S. federal tax on gas is dirt cheap at 18.4 cents per gallon, but State taxes range from 8 cents in Alaska to over 44 cents in New York. Mention increasing the federal tax and you get huge backlash by people who likely have no clue what the state tax is or if there even is one. But you are so right that an increase in the Federal gas tax could help in funding education etc. About 140 billion gallons of gas are purchased every year in the U.S. and at 50 cents a gallon it would be 70 billion in revenue which is more than the amount that Congress is now fighting over cutting from meaningful programs in the budget under the threat of shutting down the government. And it sure would curb the desire for gas guzzlers.

It doesn't matter what the tax is, the oil companies still get their price and tax only raises the overall cost.

Yep - petrol tax to fund education/infrastructure and we could even use tax on fags to subsidise a decent healthcare system. I used to smoke in the UK - I got f**ked on taxes but at least when I broke my arm I didn't have to pay a penny for the treatment

Education, infrastructure and healthcare funded by taxes?? What the hell must I be thinking? I'm so sorry

Oi the taxes on smokes in many places are huge and make gas tax look like a bargain.

I don't care, I gave them up - not my problem any more

In 2005 before I stopped I was paying £5 odd a pack, and that's for decent fags too. Some places round my way are now just getting over $5.00. It's all relative.

You have to admit though, healthcare funded by smoking has a nice poetic ring to it

Especially considering the massive burden place on the healthcare system, by treating smoking-related diseases and ailments.

But isn't this countered by them generously dying early and not claiming their pensions?

Well, they'd be paying for it themselves, technically . . .

OK, it wasn't a perfect idea but I was just thinking out loud.

Most of them are not generous enough - most of them are some of the most selfish bastards on the planet.

'Tis true that some can be, yes. I've been off them for quite a while now, but when I did smoke I at least made a concerted effort to keep to myself, or around other smokers, so as not to bother any one.

Whether I'll become a burden on the health system because of it remains to be seen but I quit in my mid-20s so fingers crossed the damage is minimal.
